Is the JBL sound system in a 2010 the same as the JBL system from a Gen 2? If they aren’t, how are they different? I currently have a 2004 with JBL but am on the verge of buying a 2010 with JBL and have heard different answers to this question.
idk the differences between the two generations, but with gen 3, different models had different sound systems
I mean, what kind of differences / similarities do you care about? They've both got techno bits made by or licensed from JBL, and they're both systems designed in different years to live in different cars and probably with different numbers of speakers and probably some differences in specs. And then, starting with the Gen 3 refresh in 2012, the JBL systems are JBL GreenEdge, just to keep things interesting.
Nope. New ones have a lot more midbass in the front from the 6x9s they used instead of the old 6.5" speakers the 2nd gen use. They use midbass 6x9s in the front doors, two tweeters with crossovers in the far corners of the dash, and the rear is the same mediocre sounding 6.5" lower speaker and tweeter at the top of the door. They also use neodymium magnets so they are all super high efficiency now so it makes replacing them more difficult when they inevitably blow out. Sensitivity is like 92-93db on them vs the standard 86-89db stuff. So you pretty much have to find an aftermarket component that also uses neodymium magnets for the driver or you'll get speakers that are half as loud as the rest of the system. I ended up using some 6x9 neodymium units from polk in my front doors when they blew out. Not as bass'ey so a bummer, but they are coaxial so i can hear the voices a lot better now. I just bought a jbl basspro hub 11" spare tire speaker to throw in to make it sound good again without having any annoying boxes in the way. Hopefully it fits well.
