What are your fuse tap methods for a dash cam?

I got the power for mine from the safety pod up by the mirror on the windshield. I can't remember what its fuse rating was, but it was clearly more than needed for that device so I wasn't worried.

That way I just have a short pigtail that comes out of the safety pod along with the original wiring, makes a u-turn downwards and plugs into my dashcam. It has worked great for a few years now. I did a whole thread about it, you can probably search that out.

Well, you need to add a standby power supply- a battery dedicated to the dashcam. Usually a controller module too, it supervises switching the camera from car power to backup battery, and maintains charge on that battery. Ideally you attach that to the floor or somewhere out of the way so it doesn't overheat, and then run wires from it up to the camera.

That's a significantly more advanced installation, and we didn't need it, so I never went there.

 

Search for VIOFO dashcam on Amazon. They have a hard wire accessory that you connect to un-switched power and it will monitor the battery voltage and turn off the camera if the battery drops below a selected voltage.
