I haven't found any in my searching, and I assume if anyone on here had used one they'd have posted, but I'll ask anyway: has anyone used this type of add-on to get CarPlay / Android Auto on the factory head unit?

Insert link here - new user so can't include - but it's an adapter from CarABC.cn that installs behind the head unit. Available from Amazon as well for $200, and lists compatible models of 2014-2019 Toyotas.

I'm considering buying one for a 2016 V 5. My major hesitation is that I expect to lose access to the configuration screens - it would be nice to have a switch to flip between this and EnTune - but I've never touched those settings since initial setup so it doesn't seem like a huge risk. It also sounds like the resolution on the display might lead to a disappointing result but it's gotta be better than what it's like using a Pixel for navigation since Google stripped out native Android Auto in favor of some flaky Maps add-ons.

You would be disappointed at the existing screen's low resolution and poor brightness under the right sun angles.

I have used Ottocast to change wired Carplay/AA to wireless. They beat the rest in speed and almost no lag.

This 10" version is standlone. No inpact on the existing mfd functions. No car wiring other than power needed. Plus it comes with a front facing camera, rear is optional. Includes gps.

Ottocast also has 5 and 7" versions. They usually have discount coupons on their website. Amazon has Ottocast but this one may be too new.

I've been thinking about that type of device for my Corolla, with no built in screen, but for the V I think it would be too much clutter on top of the two built in screens, but to mention where to position it...

I would put it on the dash to the left of the steering wheel.
