The overtight oil filter catridge cap......It's not the dealer's fault.

For many Spin-on conversion won't be foolproof either ..

 

I bumped into this listing. Knowing the significant difference in applying torque to the nut vs maybe less than a cm further out, this flat top will likely ease removal.

I currently have a newish Dorman cap and it doesn’t seem to get stuck as much to the SST.

Or just score a 3/8” drive torque wrench, and you can use it at various mid-range torque applications.

 

You don't even need a torque wrench. Just "snug" it.
I only had a problem removing mine the first time I did it. It was tight!
Then put the clip back on, just in case.

I normally smear some of the left over oil around the threads before i screw it back on, then hand tight it, never with a wrench. Never had a problem taking it off, nor did it ever leak. 18 ft lbs is a bit extreme for a oil filter imo

 

Yes. I assume they made the torque specification that high to assure it's fully seated even in case of a tighter-than-usual O-ring with no oil. Then idiot mechanics tighten it to several times that ample value. There'd be no problem if they'd designed the cap to have some sort of positive stop so it can't be overtightened.

 

That's nearly the way it is already. It turns down in with about a constant amount of force and then bonks to a stop when the flanges touch. You can put as much torque on it as you want from that point, but the extra torque barely turns it at all.

I suspect the only way they could make that stop any more 'positive' would be to make the whole cap out of a less elastic material.

 

Be more creative! How 'bout a protrusion on the cap designed to barely clear a fixed protrusion exactly one revolution before hits it solidly the next time it comes around?
