if i were the victim, i would have done everything i could have to avoid the accident. however, i have experienced the feelings he might have succumbed to.
in a court of law, the person in the prius will be held responsible

Your "logic" is totally screwed up.
When there is plenty of space for everybody, the right
way to merge is to keep a steady pace and let the merging
    drivers blend in.
Which is EXACTLY what the "victim" was trying to do.

Incorrect, the victim didn't react to the first stage of the car moving into their lane in an unsafe way at the very first moment the tires went over the lane lines. Taking your foot off the gas and wondering to yourself what kind of stupid the assailant was about to do at the moment the tires go over the lane lines is called defensive driving. At this stage keeping a steady pace is offensive driving, which means you're increasing rather decreasing the risk of a collision. And there's plenty of ego-trip drivers who do this as a matter of principle because defending their ego is more important than driving their car for decades without getting in an accident with another vehicle. The slower you go, the more time you have to avoid a collision.

Yes, agreed... It high level executive decision making in your brain that has to intervene and set aside the damage to your car long enough for you to say to yourself, "I'm following the person who just hit my car and they aren't pulling over. This person might be dangerous... Is it really worth the risk to try and chase this person down?" And granted, in the heat of the moment, it's not an easy thought process to go through, especially when you know you have dash cam footage of it.

YOU can NOT make that call because you can not SEE all of the other vehicles that were potentially involved.
What if, for instance, the victim had another vehicle tailgating him so that slowing down more wasn't a good idea ?

And it is NOT incorrect that the vehicle going straight ahead in a merge like that has the right of way......
and the merging vehicle has the legal responsibility to merge safely.

I agree that in most situations what you say is true......as far as best practice goes........but it is not
true in ALL similar situations. The Prius driver was just being a TURD.......at least twice.

yep... these days even just honking at someone who doesn't notice the green light could get you shot. I'm still honking, but a little more nervous than I used to be.
