Prius 30 modify battery on lifepo4 33140

    Hi everyone. I recently completed a battery upgrade. I'll post some photos here, maybe my experience will be useful to someone.

    Are those the 3.2v 15Ah models?
    I like the arrangement. 3 packs of 21 should give you 201+ volts, so that's a good match.
    Are you concerned about the discharge rating? Sometimes as much as 150+ amps can be drawn on hard acceleration from a stop, and 100+ amps regen/charging during hard braking.

    This makes no sense? Is this a failed project? Why no explanation or details on how it's wired? Or how much it costs... I've read that these 33140 only cost $8, is that true? And I'm only counting 46 of them in your photos, which at 3.2v each is only 147.2 volts which won't be enough power to run a Prius? Am I missing something here? This design seems impossible...

    Because of the metal base plate being added, they aren't stacked 3 cells high... I'm only seeing them stacked 2 cells high, which isn't enough power?

    Thanks, I didn't see that one... So that puts it in range, but seems like bus bars aren't thick enough to handle 100-150amp peaks. And if these batteries are only $8 each, they might have problems with that many amps/short lifespan. Looking forward to learning more about this.

    No I'm not cutting up my battery tray and all that mess to do something like this what I'd like to do is get a double size battery so that tray that sits on top of my battery in the back now would be sitting maybe 5 in taller than it is now I would just put some trim around it call it a day what would that do who knows It just be a big honking battery based on the 211 volt system that we're working with and give me what double the amps an hour I don't know certainly better than what I have now. I've seen some pre-built batteries that are pretty close actually look like they could work be in the voltage range and all that and be about I don't know what 8,000 AH or something like that

    Don't know about what a double size battery there's some threads on it somewhere but yeah I don't know about it either I know it could be done they're doing it with other electric things bicycles and all kinds of stuff so it can be done there are battery packs that other people have made up that are actually very close I just need to make sure the voltage and all of that chemistry is even selectable if I want there are people out there that make batteries for all kinds of things kind of like the ones in the Prius batteries out of modules and bus bars and that sort of thing they do this in industries also for other things beside hybrid cars. The way I understand it is the battery just has to be built based on the voltage of the system and whatever AH you're struggling to get or whatever and then that's that your battery is going to be this big and hence a Tesla battery is as big as the whole floor of the car.

    Well it is when those Tesla's catch on fire it's quite the show Will our nickel metal hydride burn like that too? I know it's not as big but I mean as it is flammable?

    Didn't expect it to be so popular.
    I'll tell you in order.
    Initially, there were thoughts about 32700, since batteries for the Civic are assembled on such elements and cars have been riding for several years. I began to study the topic, looked at the discharge and charging currents of the car. I bought 1 element 33140 and started testing.
    The battery easily gives out 160A for 60 seconds, while it has a slightly noticeable heating (by the way, a car does not consume more than 100A for more than 5-8 seconds and does not give out when charging)
    Voltage moment. 5 lifepo4 cells are great match with 12 Nimh cells.

    made according to the same principle, though the elements are smaller there both in size and in capacity.
    the golden rule of batteries, the larger the capacity, the easier it is for the battery to give more current, which is why I decided to do it at 33140, not 3270. Although on YouTube I found remake videos for 3270 two in parallel.
    the assembly turned out to be 2 modules for 23 elements and one for 24. A total of 70 elements. Copper plates 1mm thick and 18mm wide, based on this, the conductor cross section is 18mm, the high-voltage wire of the battery itself is 10-12 squares. Which is smaller than my jumpers. I tested the heating of the plates and the rod wire at a current of 100A for 60 seconds and the standard wire heated up much more than the plate.

    About the battery tray. Initially, I thought just to screw the elements to the case, but then I suddenly thought it would be necessary for someone else to do it and send it by mail. And then I decided to make a battery on a pallet so that I could assemble it all with wiring and send it to a person, and he could already easily install and connect it without any special knowledge.
    About cost. Batteries cost $15 a piece where I live. And another $ 500 was spent on jumpers, metal paint, bms and other little things.


    So far I've driven a little. Of the remarkable consumption fell in the city by 1 liter, on the highway 0.5 liters per 100 km. With a sharp acceleration, when the pedal is pressed all the way down, there is no longer that drawdown in voltage that was previously.

    It always comes down to materials used to connect it all and mount it... Your efforts are impressive and unique... Offers much perspective.

    Currently at top of my to do list is installing nexcell modules in a Gen1 Honda Insight, so your fabrication work is something I have to do similarly... Using as many modified standard Prius parts has been a big limit. Seems like you didn't let that limit you as much?

    There is really nothing complicated in the Prius battery. I used to make golf car batteries before the Prius. I also worked with Kia soul ev batteries, put ionic modules instead of regular ones, there is much more work there.

    If someone takes up the alteration of their battery, I could help with advice if such is needed. Now I would make a battery all the same for 32700, it seems to me that it will be easier to connect the elements.

    in Honda it is easier to put 32700 in parallel, with a bolt fastening. What to eat to camouflage nexcell. In Ukraine, they have been putting 32700 in Honda for a long time.

    Yes the Honda guys have been doing the round cell conversions for some times but usually they don't last so long is the problem or at least that was the problem so something's changed what might that be I think the round cells that were failing were also lithium something another they weren't nickel metal hydride I don't believe anyway I never tried them personally other people did they didn't do so well I think they're right on this list I was under the assumption with this battery business that as long as you came up with the right amount of kilowatts or whatever it is what's the problem or you can make it more kilowatts same base voltage all of that stuff so I would think by today's battery technology and all of that since the generation 2 has been out You should be able to build a battery that's almost twice the amount of KW and almost the same weight or a little heavier than what we've got or something like that battery technology seems to have come a long way since 2007 but then when I talk to the people about doing something like this to say a volt not likely they say . At least the battery and the Prius is in a real funny shape that has to fit in a specific weird hole like a lot of these vehicles least you just have a rectangular hole in the back where this thing sits If it was twice as high or near it wouldn't really make any difference He would lose a few inches of space behind the back seats going up to the ceiling oh well
