Featured I love electric vehicles – and was an early adopter. But increasingly I feel duped

I like discussions- especially when it involves different viewpoints and the chance to learn.
Appreciated reading the other post as much as reading Mr Atkinson article.

Actually Mr Atkinson (Mr Bean) is arguably a scientist (My first university degree was in electrical and electronic engineering, with a subsequent master’s in control systems) and also a pretty corny actor on the side.

 

Rowan Atkinson was duped by his sources of information.

I've gotten some smiles thanks to Rowan Atkinson's silent skits which are like watching Benny Hill. I never could sit through anything where Atkinson spoke. Instead, I preferred and bought Dr Who, Monty Python, and Pink Floyd whose words and lyrics made more sense than Atkinson's spoken pieces and this recent one.

What he wants to 'discuss' was discussed here and elsewhere years ago. In the counter piece I posted, the latest cited report was published in 2021. Atkinson didn't provide any new info, and purposely left out use emissions to respread an anti-EV talking point.

Heard in relation to this somewhere that the UK banning ICE sales by 2030 was in discussions.

The the UK will restrict new gasoline and diesel vehicles to phevs in 2030. It will restrict new engined cars after 2035 to be hydrogen, and will allow bevs and hydrogen vehicles including fuel cells.

The UK is a small country, about 35% as big as texas. I believe it is only 600 miles for the longest stretch from south england to north scotland. I can't imagine going 100% is going to do much to reduce ghg versus 50% by 2035 and 75% by 2040. People are just going to keep their non hybrid ice vehicles longer. I don't like the regulations and don't think thy will actually be fully implemented.

I did find out what stupid decision mr. bean made on vehicle. He chose an i3, which had only a 84 mile ev range. He probably is right too expensive for that carbon fiber body, and too long to charge on a long trip. Imagine if he had looked at the Bmw i4 or something current or the best sellers the Tesla model 3/Y. Different analysis. OK so maybe mr. bean duped himself by not doing his homework, and wants to use his bad judgement to punish the entire sector.

Now that we are sober, the new evs will last longer and certainly break the three year ownership paradigm. Using increased reliability enhanced by dramatically reduced mechanical complexity. Permanent magnet motors and properly designed and cooled power electronics are practically bulletproof.

Yes high capacity battery technology has just begun to reach maturity with further breakthroughs now being lab tested. But will progress magically stop in 2023? Not likely since scientists in Asia have joined Western experts in a modern day gold rush and oil barrons era.

Electrification of consumer transportation is here to stay. Hydrocarbons will have their applications such as flight and backup power while the grid will continue to use natural gas, coal, hydro and renewables. Electric cars have become the consumers choice especially when they are more available and affordable from Tesla or Hyundai than a Rav4 or Prius.

 

It isn't like 3 year old cars were being sent to the scrapper after being traded in.

 

just reading priuschat, it's amazing the beaters people try desperately to keep on the road.

 

Or will OTA updates keep all cars feeling more current and thus encourage longer ownership by the initial purchaser? Think how long the Tesla models have been visually not significantly changed? Not like a '55 to '56 Chevy change.

How are we going to fill the dump with batteries if we don't? . . . NOT!

Massachusetts and California share similar symptom. IMHO, it just drives the individual consumers to energy independence faster.

Not here to debate the individual updates, I'm just pointing out that Atkinson clearly already received a lot of educational feedback on his post.

And honestly? This whole post was about his feelings and not the mixed up facts he re-told while expressing them.
