2023 Weird tire size and gas mileage: XLE 195/50R19 52MPG vs LE P195/60R17 57/56 MPG

I just took a 2020 Prius XLE for an extended test drive. I’m so upset with myself for declining on the allocated 2022 XLE silver. Have to stop beating myself up! I was trying to make a decision but wanted to see the 2023. I really didn’t understand how low the seats would be on 2023.

I don’t want to buy a 3 yr old car at new car pricing. Maybe get the 2023 and think of it as a trial while waiting for a 2022 to appear out of nowhere. Never know….someone who bought a 2022 might be wishing they had a waited. I see a few silver XLEs in CA but nothing near CT. I waited it out back in 2015 when I was looking for a silver 2009 with leather and a nice one appeared eventually.

 

I wasn't expecting super high MPG based on the reviews. It's good enough for the bulk of the driving I do. There are probably better options if you're really looking to save there. If you own property, fully electric is probably the way to go. I just really liked the design of the car.

I'm not sure about the manual seat, but the powered seat does move up quite a bit. The starting setting was incredibly low.

I think, unless you either really want one, or really need one, now is not the time to go car shopping. Supply is low, prices are high, and interest rates are bonkers. If you can hold off until something you really like comes along, that's probably for the best.

 

For what it's worth, on the LE I'm getting 61 avg (after 5k ish miles) now without trying (gun it more than a few times a tank) and had a 63.9 tank.

 

Is it what you read on the display or what you calculate? Gen 4 display overstates it by 5 mpg.

 

Thanks. My extended test drive of the 2020 went well. Definitely more my style and level of comfort but for that price I should get new car. Can’t wait a couple of years. Depending on timing I’ll probably get the 2023. If I can’t get used to it over a couple of years time, it will be a more valuable trade.

 

I was wondering about this. When I test drove the 2020 today it was registering 53mpg.

 

Actually both, it was surprisingly similar - almost, if not the same - number when I checked a week or so ago, didn't pay attention to in dash guage mpg calculator for this last tank.

But to be clear, the numbers I've come up with and posted so far are calculated by Miles driven after a fill-up, by the amount of gas in gallons it took to refill. So I figure that was the amount of gas used to get the number of miles recorded.

What I do is feather the gas pedal to get back into ev mode when safe/won't impeade traffic and practical. Still floor it here and there, this car is fun to drive.

Thanks! I’m desperately trying to let go of the fact that I said no to a brand new 2022 that would have been ordered just for me. Dealer saying the best they could do at this point is try for an auction unless someone rolls onto the lot with one. : } I can’t handle that at this point. Ironically when searching yesterday I found a clean history 2022 (too far away) that had gone to auction. Apparently some dealerships don’t have Prius customers and don’t want a car sitting on their lot for more than two weeks even with this car shortage. Not sure how these sales people are feeding themselves.

 

If you're still looking for 17's, I will have my wheels only after my Prius LE reaches the dealer around 3 weeks from now and I swap out my OEM black wheels for some aftermarket wheels.

 

Those are actually hubcaps aren’t they? Alloy wheels behind?

 

The LE has both hubcaps over alloys; will be giving both up when my car comes in for aftermarket 17" alloys below (not real car picture; tires shown on car depiction)
