The OP has a link to an article.

Edit: goes to see. Yup, meaningless stats.

    What makes it meaningless?

Here's a good answer from the link's own comments section:

"I hate when reports like this are used to infer trends and conclusions when the data is statistically meaningless as it is presented.

In order to arrive at the conclusion that “Toyota Owners Trade Their Cars for EVs More Than Any Other Brand” we would also need to consider things like:

    • What percentage of the entire customer dataset does Toyota owners represent?
    • What percentage of Toyota owners trade in for an EV vs ICE? How does that compare against other brands being traded in?
    • Are Toyota owners generally more receptive to the concept of EVs compared to, say, a Jeep owner?
It could just be that 12% of the people that walk into CarMax are Toyota owners. Unfortunately this kind of reporting is all too common and while it’s pretty harmless here, statistics are frequently abused by malicious actors to influence public opinion or fuel conspiracy theories."

Got it. I thought you were referring to the Edmunds video.

I think you've called out something pretty significant here.

Easy to believe that lots of Prius owners switched to EVs.

...I don't think that many Tundras or 4Runners got swapped in.

It is just what business Carmax was seeing.
Now, 98% of cars traded in for a new Tesla were ICE, with Toyota and Honda being the two most common.
Tesla Reveals What Cars Tesla Buyers Trade In

"For the Tesla Model 3, our most popular EV at CarMax from September 2022 – February 2023, the most common trade-in was a Honda Civic and the second most common was a Toyota Tacoma. For shoppers buying a Nissan Leaf (third most popular EV at CarMax from this data reporting), the most common trade-in was a Toyota Prius."
    https://www.carmax.com/articles/rising-consumer-interest-in-electric-vehicles

While many early hybrid owners did go EV, we can't suppose that is why Toyotas are getting traded in at Carmax; no Tacoma hybrid yet. Plug in market share is growing faster than hybrid did. Model 3 sales will be rivaling Camry's in the US soon. The Tesla has bested the Prius' best year. I don't think there is enough hybrids out there to support being a major trade in for EVs. The Accord was one of the top ones for the Model 3.

    Thought it was bZ.

It is no-brainer that Prius HEV and PHEV owners are the most likely to trade in for a BEV. It is a smaller leap than to trade in from a pure-ICE car.

But then there are others like @Trollbait who downgrade from a Prius to a pure-ICE vehicle. Go figure. ;)

Many switched back to ICE from the Prius after gas prices dropped from that spike in the 2008 time frame.

Wished I could have kept the Prius, but it wouldn't have fit the replacement water heater I needed to pick up on a weekend a few weeks ago. It would also be 17 years old. The proceeding generations didn't interest me. The Prius c was a maybe, but I got the Sonic for around $7000 less.
My parting with Toyota had nothing to do with the drive train.

Almost like electrification isn't the only criteria in vehicle selection.... curious... ;)

Toyota already said they'll only do 800V on big batteries (over 100kWh) so it's not coming to Toyota any time soon unless they make a Sequoia or Grand Highlander with 100kWh. So Toyota EVs will be all 400V and you'll need to get a big boy Lexus EV to enjoy 800V.

Meanwhile, VAG is pushing 800V downmarket and it'll eventually show up in VW branded models.

Owners shortening their vehicle names have actual names like two of the examples you gave above - Model 3 to M3 and Ioniq5 to I5. (and Mustang Mach-E to MME)

    No one's shortening a ID.4 to "4", R1T to "1T" and bZ4X to "4X".

    Talking about missing the point.

ID.4 is what they are stuck with.

    4X is simple & clear.

Which then begs a follow-up question "what's a 4X"? I might as well say the full name to not have to repeat myself to the person inquiring about the car.

Try it sometime. Works fine for me at our EV events. There's no ambiguity saying "4X". They understand exactly what I'm referring to and how it fits into the bigger picture. 20230501_194048.jpg

I think you can easily fit a water heater in a Prius with the rear seats folded down and the trunk bar removed.

However, they say you should never put a water heater on its side. So, you might have done some damage when you hauled it with your Outback.

    bZ4X for beyond-zero (electrified) four-wheel-drive crossover.

Four-wheel drive may not be available on all models.

    Typo for a BMW.

The official name for the sub-brand is Toyota Beyond Zero. If the Beyond Zero or abbreviation isn't going to be used, then just forget the bZ all together, and call it a Toyota 4X.
