So here's what we have going. Looked around a while for a sub enclosure for a Prius V that would fit into a corner pocket. Cant find a prebuilt one and my time is a bit more valuable- I have to work for a living 24/7 and I'm an independent LLC that uses my vehicles as business.

Someone on Ebay on built one, and it gets me in the ballpark. Some good work. I decided to work it some more. Let's fix some things.

    1. Cannot open the storage area underneath the floor without removing the speaker. I cut the front out and recessed it in some. JB Weld was my friend for doing this. Some reshaping is needed also. Like I said, good job, but could be better.

    2. Cut the bottom and built a mold in the left storage area to iincrease the volume of the enclosure.

So now I have an Alpine ILX-509.. Biggest radio I can fit without interference with the vents or the power button- in a Prius V, that's 9" max. All steering wheel features and vehicle controls retained. Used a Maestro interface and a bypass module to disable the lock features for video and access to some of the radio features that would require the vehicle to be in park with the parking brake on. To the naysayers, I also get a bit more than what the OEM radio gave me.

This was a low mileage 8 year old vehicle that had some butchery done to the JBL system. The person I bought it from had some Best Buy POS Boss radio installed with a receipt for $275 and it was unlistenable _ distortion above 1/4 volume, no rear door speakers and no functional steering wheel controls. He also handed me over two factory Toyota radios- one a JBL. There were adapters connectors and chopped wires. I own five different Prius vehicles. I looked into upgrading it with a better OEM and decided this was the best route as (1) I could not get a straight answer regarding upgrade options from anyone here or from any resellers and (2) given the butchery, I wouldn’t even know if I had a good radio to begin with.

I have also set up a 3rd gen with the OEM radio using a JBL DSP amp and a sub- and that worked out great. But that was something that was already working to begin with.

I highly recommend Crutchfied for getting everything you need to do this right. I SAF wouldn't go to some Corporate Dime Store. Either you spend some time to study it and figure it out, or you find a small shop Pro.

Yes thank goodness I'm past all the audio in the car business Not really necessary anymore kind of died for me in the late '90s I did retain two of my Polk C10 subwoofers and I still use them pretty regularly as my tools and things can fit right on top of the subwoofer kind of without any problems especially if they're in containers or boxes doesn't seem to bother the Polk C10 it looks like an airplane wing if you remember those sort of things I haven't bothered trying to put any of my Alpine pre out head units in any kind of a Prius It would seem to not be the thing to do so I have an older Corolla that still has a Alpine 7618 pre-out head a single amplifier under one of the seats the Polk C10 and the trunk laying flatly on the floor some 6 and 1/2 mid base drivers strategically placed in the doors which the car came with speakers in the doors so no big outfit very little sound deadening material or anything needed and it sounds wonderful when I turn it on unfortunately these days whether working out of my car not It seems everybody wants to spend their lives talking to you on the phone so listening to music not such a big thing even if I'm living out of my car which I don't. Someone would always be ringing the phone

Great post! How did you get the dash kit to fit properly? On mine it leaves a significant gap between the radio and the HVAC controls panels

I have the same gap in a generation too with a mid-grade I think Clarion flat panel screen stereo thing I think it has GPS built in it has a remote I don't think the buttons on the steering wheel work it this is before that was capable I think etc It all works but the install kit from Meta definitely is lacking but I never use it or the GPS so you know it's not really a thing.

Crutchfield supplied a faceplate made by Metra. It fits perfectly- no gap. The radio fits in a one Din opening and they give you shelf- it serves me no purpose as the shelf is desisned to fit in the bottom part of the face. Thats where i need this large radio to go. Im going to cut a piece of aluminum or plastic to fill in the gap.

Ill get better picks as I move along. Still tackling the four individual parts of this project.. the radio, the amp, the front speaker setup and the sub.

Yeah, but I never grew up.

I had one of those Alpine ERA-G320 EQ's that i velcroed the eq to the sun visor on a Jeep TJ Wrangler. For years afterwards, the thing drove a 50's era Dynaco tube amp in my shop until the head display went bad and I sprung the cash to by a decent preamp DAC. Still, I miss it.

Finished up the sub and anchored it. Lots of Peel And Seal. The audiophile people will tell you to use fiberglass insulation over polyfill because they can hear things that my cat hears when you line your speaker boxes with fiberglass insulation and use gold plated power cables. I didnt happen to have any gold plated power cables, but my neighbor has volumes of fiberglass insulation.

Moving along.. at some point ill do a build log if someone is interested.

Left side sub completed- a lil rework of a sub that someone on ebay made for a Prius station wagon.

2 speaker pods built into the rear quarter windows to accept a 6.75" speaker.

this weekends project is to scratch a matching sub enclosure for the right corner. 20230630_223854.jpg

I too believe in the "log out and live" philosophy. Despite that i run an IT buisiness, my love of IT is also my hatred of it- social media is a disease. To paraprhase Arthur C Clarke- " technology is an enhancement of life and not a substitute for getting a life."

Mounting ring for a 10" sub out of .75 mdf. To flush mount it I also cut one that fits tight to a 12" speaker.

The cargo floor has to clear the speaker. Largely unused space in these corners.

Im rough calculating a box internal volume of anywhere between .48 and .6 cubic feet. The only way to know for sure is build it and flood it. Im building it for a JL Audio 10, but if the volume isbt sufficient, then an Alpine R8 will work.. mounted into a JL Audio 10 inch frame to match the opposite side.
