Just purchased a 2022 Pruis XLE. While driving home at 45 MPH my wife rolled down the rear windows.
The wind noise was so loud my ears hurt. Is this just the nature of this car? What can possibly be done other than not driving with windows rolled down?

yes, the aerodynamics of the car cause wind buffeting when the rear windows are down

The slip-steam dynamics of the Gen 4 Prius (and some other vehicles) will cause this when you partially lower the rear windows. Quite simply, it is part of the cost of an extremely efficient vehicle. Lowering the front windows along with the rear alleviate the problem. Just try and remember you didn’t purchase a sport coupe and you will be a lot happier.
In all honesty, my 2008 F250 exhibited the same phenomenon. FWTW

I thought all cars made wind noise with the windows open above 45 mph. They also burn more gas with the windows open at that speed.

This helps, doesn't have to be open a lot, changes something in the air flow.

EVERY car I've owned in the past 20 years or so did that.
My C does. My Ford does.

If it hurts when you do that..............:)

Yeah, don't go too fast with only the rear windows down. The buffeting will actually start to pull on the front doors and windows.

I just install aftermarket plastic rain visors to the tops of the doors, then, cracking the windows, even at highway speeds, is a lot more quiet than without them. Plus, you can leave your windows cracked open while parked on hot days and you can't see it from outside.....but the hot air escapes and keeps the interior much cooler.
