What is this tinted roof moulding called and does it serve any purpose? Am trying to locate the source of a bad rain leak so was wondering if it's ok to reseal around this piece. Thanks in advance.

I suspect it's just covering where the sheet metal does something unsightly to support the hatch hinges. If the molding comes easily off, you should be able to see all the concealed mysteries (which will often include a lot of rotting leaves).

Thanks for the suggestion. Once I figure out how to remove it I will do just that

That is fantastic! Could not have wished for a better reference. Will figure out how to follow the instructions in reverse in order to remove and check under the moulding.

The Repair Manual (more info) has illustrated procedures for removal and installation, under Vehicle Exterior: Exterior Panels/Trim: Roof Garnish; there are some steps that aren’t obvious, such as applying protective tape to the side finish moulding sub-assemblies. To get access to the nuts, you’ll also need the procedures (each with about 70 steps) to remove and reinstall the roof headlining and related interior trim.

Thanks again for the additional information. Sounds like it might take a while but it has to be done.
