Hi guys, I just reached and uncovered the head gasket. Would you please be kind to review and comment and advise on the attached pictures of the existing head gasket and the cylinders?

condition is that the Cylinder 2&4 were misfiring. I’m going to swap the head gasket and start putting back things together very soon.

    thank you!

I wonder why that one piston is so clean compared to the others?

Looks like she's been burning oil too. My no2 looked like you're number1 . I'm 3 hours after the head gasket was replaced on the drive away from the shop that did the head gasket 14 mi into the trip the center girdle let go the rod broke on number two and destroyed the engine $800 down the toilet. I don't think the generation 3 open deck design is worthy of this kind of work I know there are others who do it but by the time you get done machining flattening heads possibly replacing rings seems like a smart thing to do the cost of become so exorbitant he would have been better off with a JDM takeout with 70,000 or less on it seriously.

You need to replace the engine!

If you just replace the head gasket, it will not last very long. Any money you spend trying to fix your existing engine is just throwing your money away.

Buying a used or rebuilt engine is the best way to save your Prius.

The best way to save a gen3 Prius that is...

Suspect headgaskets on Gen2 and Gen4 are completely straightforward because they are incredibly rare... But with Gen3 it's clearly a design failure of EGR & crappy rings & head gasket failure...

There's a guy on here based out of Oklahoma who can put a Gen4 engine in a Gen3 Prius in a day in your driveway for $1500. Pretty sure you can get a low mileage warrantied Gen4 engine from a wrecker for way less than $2K

Of course OP is doing their own work so maybe rolling the dice and doing a headgasket and seeing how many miles you get out of it till Gen4 engine found is smartest path?

The head gasket didn’t fit on the frame. I bought 26515PT Fel-Pro Head Gasket from Autozone it seems that right hole is little off by a pinch size. I can explain more. I returned it saying it doesn’t fit the store hd no more in stock. I’m planning to try some other brand.

    a. is this any known issue? I’m worried the head unit is damaged.

    b. I just got a doubt if this engine is not even a 2010 one. I bought this car 2months agonit had 210k. It there a I can identify to confirm this is 2010 engine indeed.

Update: I just watch below DIY video. He placed the gasket on the dowel pins and seemingly the gasket didn’t sit fully flat. If you observe. Mine is the exact same situation.

That's how all the fel-Pro PT gaskets sit on top of the head in Toyodadom anyway. As far as I can remember all the way back to the two TC 1970 something hemi head engine the PT gasket sat on there the same way I've put many on ce you put the head down on that bad boy it will not be standing up anymore I guarantee you that so your gasket was probably fine I didn't look up the number to confirm but Fel-Pro did not use to make a lot of mistakes. I do not know about today's processes with them.

When you lay it down on the head and it stands up like that a little bit if you pick the gasket up and just gently bend it a little like we're number one and number four are put your thumbs in the middle and gently shape the gasket now drop it on laying flat drop the head The head would have done the same thing just being dropped on there now you've done that with your fingers to make it lay flat to make you think better of it or something.

Hi guys, thank you for your insights.

I have a question, I lost one if the o ring which sits on the head unit. I’m attaching pictures indicating the same. Can u please what it is called technically? Autozone and advance auto parts are having hard time trying to know what part that is.

Aren't those the washers that go under the bolts o-rings are generally rubber black that sort of thing they seal something.
