Another power outage...

    We had another power outage this weekend, approximately 36 hours. This time, I was prepared. I pulled out my inverter, plugged it into my Prius, ran an extension cord into my kitchen, and ran my fridge/freezer during the outage. I ran it for about an hour every 4 hours and kept the freezer under freezing and the fridge under 41 degrees.

    Where is this? Guessing California, not sure why.

    For the electrical wizards: how would a Prius compare to a gas generator; what size/features (if any) would be comparable? Pros/Cons vs a dedicated gas generator?

    Taken from other threads- but roughly, if the inverter is fed by the 12v you can take around 750W continuously with higher momentary peaks. If you tap the traction battery, you can sustain a bit over 3000W continuously, again with higher momentary peaks.

    Those values would align roughly with the Honda eu1000i or Honda eu3200i models, respectively.

    All of these solutions would give you nice clean inverter-made power suitable for finicky electronics and motors.

    One critical difference is that a Prius with a Converdant-style inverter will supply both 120/240V power where the Honda eu3200i is a 120V-only model. You'd have to go up to the eu7000is to get an inverter-type 120/240V model from that brand, though there may be other options from other brands.
