looks like I know a guy who can get me all the japan parts I need for the conversion, waiting for the price next week.

I should compare between charging DC and AC more directly i.e. apples with apples. CHAdeMO is limited automatically to DC 17kW while charging with AC could manage e.g. 7kWh. CHAdeMO takes about 16 minutes to charge from 0% to max.80% for our 2018 Prius PHV. This suggests that AC 7kW charging would take about 39 minutes from 0% to 80%.

This is very close to my original goal in this discussion thread i.e. to slow CHAdeMO charging down to about 30 minutes. Instead of finding(/creating) a menu point in the Prius to achieve this perhaps I should instead replace the AC 3.3kW system with an AC 7kW system, which would be a bit slower than desired, however, would come with the many advantages listed above e.g. charge to 100% not just 80%.

Also, where I live there are now increasingly Type 2 charges delivering much more than AC 7kW e.g. AC 22kW and even AC 42kW! Since in our case CHAdeMO is limited to 17kW then these Type 2 chargers deliver more power than our Prius PHV/Prime should receive. It could be very interesting if we could accept AC 10kW or more, especially if we could choose to limit the AC current to protect the battery. Currently we can limit AC current to 8Amps via the menu i.e. reducing it from approx. 16Amps max. (Type 2 sockets can be connected directly to J1772 sockets using a simple conversion cable with suitable wiring.)

This makes an upgrade to the AC system possibly more attractive than adding CHAdeMO charging.

Hi black_jmyntrn, how are you going with your CHAdeMO upgrade? I've found a great little, hand-held unit to convert 3 phase, Type 2 AC to CHAdeMO DC for fast charging. This makes me think that increasing the AC charging from the (s)lowly 3.3kW isn't the way to go anymore, in particular for those like me who already have CHAdeMO in our Gen2 Prius PHV. Here's the link to the supplier and an image:

Since the Gen2Prius PHV can only accept up to 17kW DC via CHAdeMO, then the 3 phase, 22kW Type 2 charging stations springing up everywhere will be ideal for us.

Of course, my original question regarding how to reduce the maximum DC charging rate by about 20% or a third remains, with a view to protecting the battery even when frequently fast charging using CHAdeMO.
