Maybe wait & see. After all ... Toyota also expected well over 100,000 hydrogen cars to be running around the landscape by now. With so many stealerships gouging $5,000 over MSRP - it's going to be a tough row to hoe as the farmer says.

Toyota says it could produce 10.6 million vehicles in 2023
Same article without the register wall.

"The purpose of disclosing the baseline figure was to make it easier for suppliers to draw up management plans, a Toyota executive said."

They think there is a 10% chance of COVID and shortages still causing a reduction. This isn't a production forecast. Seems that is at 9.2 million for the fiscal year that ends in March.

Sounds like the news is that Toyota would like to make the 10.6, and is warning their suppliers to take steps to help that.

How you going to sell that many when most finance/interest rates are so high? Rents too Refinance mortgages. All that cuts into money available to buy cars.

This might be the last time Toyota production peaks at these numbers and it might be a long fall from being #1 in so many ways for so long, In one or two years it's going to be a disaster for Toyota...

As other auto makers start to flood the market with EVs Toyota is gonna start bleeding market share because customers are not gonna be interested in stopping at gas station once enough of their friends don't have to... Toyota is gonna end up up like all the car makers before the 2008 financial crisis hit with lots of cars that people don't want to buy anymore.

Hmm, I assume that doesn't include Canada then?

Only half of the lineup will be delivered this year.

(There's a link and an image of the wait times of all the vehicles in Canada from an Ontario dealer in case you have script block)

Wow!!! Is there a ranking of their market priorities/distribution data globally by region to compare those troubling numbers to?

The Sienna (all Hybrid) seems a very good pick for growing families, and amazingly good mpg, particularly city. Except: five year wait??

    RAV4 Prime, fugedaboutit.

Tesla just switched from Samsung to taiwan semi conductor for their next computer fab because Samsung can't build the production. Toyota managed their semi conductors better than everyone else but tesla. They may have redesigned for general purpose chips that are more plentiful. Fabs will be coming on line. Semis go to the highest bidder or best customer when their is a shortage. Toyota may have put contracts in place in 2021 when the shortages first occurred.

If you don't plan for the production then in a market with supply chain problems you likely will limit production. If you look at tesla, they increased prices when demand was much higher than supply. Toyota, BMW, Mercedes shifted to their more profitable cars and dealers engaged in gouging. Tesla dropped their prices back down now that they have production capacity. I can see toyota changing the mix and making less profit per car short term, to grow volume this year.

50% chance IMHO that they can do this if they put the right contracts in place 18 months ago or more. We do know that toyota does not have the battery capacity to meet the demand for rav4 prime this year, so plug ins may grow rapidly but not as much as if they had gotten supply contracts in place.

DIL just bought a Ford Escape plug-in the other day with 9k miles for essentially MSRP. Gave up waiting for a Rav4 hybrid new. Kinda bare bones but quieter than a Rav4 hybrid. Never heard an engine. No wind noise. Tire noise only.

We went 50 miles and maybe half or more was on electricity supplied by their solar panels. Smaller than my Rav4 and her version lacked many features my Rav4 has. But very practical and gets her to the 60 MPG average quite nicely without losing the ability to cover 400 miles if need be. 110 charging takes overnight at least.

First time my son who drives a Prius Plus had driven it. Absolutely confounded by the controls and buttons. Even though they were pretty traditional.Reinforced my notion that everybody should be able to find where Drive is.

6'6" driving. 6'4" 300 lbs passenger. 2 ladies and me in the back seat. Wouldn't want to go 100 miles with that many folks and my knees were up against the seatbacks. But as a second car, I'd trade. Course I'd buy a loaded version.

No but for major markets, pretty sure Canada is low on the list. The fact that there’s stock starting to come back in the US while Canadians are waiting 1-5 years for PHEVs and EVs from any manufacturer is telling. The ones with the shortest wait are Tesla and Polestar. Everything else is 18 months minimum.

We’re were all hoping more allocation comes our way because of your IR Act and the change to the tax credit

For sure. It’s a good combination and reasonably priced but clearly not Toyota’s priority.

Yup. Last spring, went to the Toyota dealer just for kicks and inquired about the RAV4 Hybrid and was quoted a year or two. Asked about the Prime and he said no, he won’t take any more deposits because they only get 1. I’m like, one a month? He said no, one a year

So yeah. Toyota has a major problem with PHEVs production and for Canada, I don’t think it’s going to get any better.

Toyota likely has to send every plug in they can to satisfy the ZEV states.

B.C. and Quebec have ZEV mandates...

(Actually I think it recently expanded nationwide)

Yep , in Québec , Ice vehicules over 244 C inch (4 l) engines gets hit with supplemental taxes when acquiring the vehicule and also supplemental taxes for yearly registration. The bigger the engine the more taxes you pay. For example acquiring a Dodge Hellcat
will cost $225 more in taxes to acquire and $321 more each year to register.
The Bonus Malus approach could get more aggressive in the near future
