Gen 5 Prius/Prius Prime: poor fuel economy, poor choice of colors, poor choice of packages/options

    That’s taken from the Canadian brochure that I have on file. Curiously, I looked at the 2004 brochure and it listed it as 4.9”… so they slightly raised for 2009??

    I’m not sure. Our 2005 was 35/33 IIRC. Maybe @daisy555 can check her 2009’s?

    I was thinking after the post changing it wasn't likely, but then there were reports of uneven tire wear for the early gen2s here. Faster on the outer tread points to under inflation.

    That’s probably why we all ran 40/38 or 42/40. The Goodyear Integrity was a basic tyre.

    My 2009 is 35/33. I’ve been keeping all four tires at 34.

    So why is front supposed to be 35 and rear 33?

    I used to have General tires and had uneven wear with both sets. When I switched to Continental True Contact I’ve had no problems with wear. I know they are both made by Continental. Sorry this is way off topic. : }

    We are approaching 7 pages, no topic drift would be freaky.:)

    The difference between front and rear tire pressures is because of the car's weight distribution. There is more weight carried by the front axle. Weight also shifts onto the front axle while braking That 2 psi probably meant something like the OEM tire sidewall flexed the same amount in the front as in the rear.

    I wouldn't worry about the axles being the same tire pressure. According to my car's display, I got 4 different settings at the moment.:whistle:

    : ) Bound to get off topic I guess.

    In the meantime I was driving on the highway in “B” mode tonight. I freaked and then looked it up. Just affects gas mileage. When do you use this mode? Going down a hill? Not sure how I managed to shift there by mistake. Oops!!

    Despite wishing specs were a bit different I’m excited about the possibility of a new car but don’t like the stress of brand new. That first scratch etc is so painful. If it all works out I just need to be grateful and not worry about it. It’s just another car with newer parts. : }

    I have resolved my own concerns.

    I had initially wanted to get a gray XSE Premium with the solar roof.

    However, because of the higher aerodynamic drag coefficient due to the higher ground clearance of higher trims, fuel economy and range take a 10% hit. For me, 38 miles on XSE and XSE Premium vs. 42 miles on SE is a huge deal. Even 42 miles may be inadequate. Prius = efficiency. I will not compromise on the efficiency.
    • So, I eliminated my concern regarding the fuel economy and range by getting the LE/SE trim.
    • I eliminated my concern with poor color choice by getting the black. Unlike the older generations, black actually looks good on Gen 5 because the car's design is pretty sporty and classy.
    • I will miss the auto-on lights and probably the parking sensors (unless it is included in the SE as an option) as well as the Homelink mirror, but I am getting everything else I need, particularly the all the new safety features, including the BSM and RCTA. The smaller display should not result in much inconvenience, as the functionality is the same. On contrary to the false information originally provided, the base trims also have a one-door smart key, which should be adequate for me for most purposes. Besides, the base trim will save me a lot of money.
    I am currently No. 1 on the wait list, which means that I will be in the driving seat of one of the very first 2023 Prius Primes unloaded at the Port of Los Angeles in late April.

    So they are telling you Prime should be available by late April. That’s good news. I hate cloth seats otherwise I might settle for LE/SE. I also really want parking sensors and still don’t get what the difference is between headlights that are auto off verses auto on/off. My 2009 has auto on and off but what I mean by this is I keep mine on all the time and they shut off when I leave car and come on when I start up without me needing to do anything. Does auto on/off mean there are sensors and lights come on and off as needed?

    Where are you getting specs on Prime?

    Late April is only a guess. The dealer thinks March, but the dealer hardly knows anything. Check with your dealer to see where you are on the waitlist.

    Auto on means that there is an auto position on the light switch. If you use the auto position, the lights come on and off automatically according to a light sensor on your dash, depending on the light level. Auto off means that the lights go off if you turn off and leave the car.

    Toyota published specs on the Prius but nothing on the Prius Prime yet. They are the same car except for the battery though.

    Weight will be different due to battery and different hybrid motor. Tire size might be different.

    Yeah, B is for going down hill, or whenever you want more engine braking. It's like using a lower gear with a traditional transmission.

    My wife once knocked the car into neutral while I was driving on the highway. Took moment to figure out what happened.

    There will only be a three-month difference. If you will be charging, get the Prius Prime. Otherwise, Prius is OK.

    I just watched a detailed YouTube video and he zoomed in on the cargo space of the Prius. It looked like the entryway drop was about 6” like a trunk. I guess we talked about this already but I didn’t realize how much of a drop there was. This is going to be an issue for me. I need to slide things out of the cargo space rather than lifting up and out. A ramp maybe? : } Looks like I’ll have to fold the back seats down and use the back door but he pointed out that the back doors do not open all the way. Looks kind of strange. Something else to get used to or not.

    I don't see a problem. If there is no drop, things could fall if you open the hatch. I wouldn't use the side doors to access the cargo area.

    Thanks for the video. I’ve never had anything fall out and I’m constantly putting things back there on top of a slick tarp. Big bag of compost and occasional bags of clay are going to be challenging. This could be a deal breaker for me. Some brainstorming ahead.
