I’m having some smell in the cabin when warming up. It smells like exhaust and the muffler Sounds a little bit different (not excessively loud) the cat has NOT been stolen. It has 500,000 km.

would anyone know what I would do to track down the leak? I’ve looked under the hood and can’t identify any leaks there. Be good to know before I get under the car..

    2010 Gen. 3 Prius

    thank you very much

Go back to the trunk lift the spare tire and make sure all the black plugs are in the big 1-in inch and 1/8 in a quarter size holes there are two or three and an a Gen 3 there may be an oblong rubber plug I'm not sure but all of those need to be in place or because of muffler position gas of the exhaust will waft up those holes in the trunk and come right in the cabin My 09s doing it right now I know the plug is out I'll put it back in a couple of days but yes I can smell it too a lot windows down type action or very cracked

Wow - you might’ve hit the nail right on the head with this one!

I remember this summer I was fussing around in there and I might’ve removed the plugs to air it out or remove some grime

    Thank you!! Will report back.

I had both of mine out to let the water out that was sitting in the trunk when I bought the car the people had no idea that this could even happen there was no damage to the trunk trough at all so I don't know if somebody had left the hatch up or how it got in there with some in the spare tire well I mean in the battery well too. I enlarge the hole and put another one in the battery well and another hole and enlarge the original on the opposite side of the battery well so now water will pass through that I don't even get in my trunk anymore and before I loaded the back with tools and nonsense I don't carry a spare I forgot to put the two rubber plugs in and this is how I knew that by the smell and I still haven't bothered to pull all the tools out to put them in. What I did was just take two small square pieces of zip tape Make sure you stick it only once and cover those two holes from the bottom of the car slap slab now it's done when I do unload the car for a yearly cleaning in the spring I will put the plugs back in the holes and the tools won't be going back in after this year
