Nov 28 (Reuters) - Tesla (TSLA.O) is developing a revamped version of Model 3, according to four people with knowledge of the effort, as the top EV maker aims to cut production costs and boost the appeal of the five-year-old electric sedan.

One focus of the redesign codenamed "Highland" is to reduce the number of components and complexity in the interior of the Model 3 while focusing on features that Tesla buyers value, including the display, …

I haven't looked at a wiring harness in the same way ever since Elon Musk explained that robots suck at fishing wires through holes and connecting them... His solution is eliminating almost all the wiring harnesses in cars and embed those circuits in the parts themselves. So instead of having a door panel with a bundle of wires behind it, you'd have a door panel with embedded circuits in it that plug in into the other circuits of the car when the panel plugs into place. Ever since, I've been like, why didn't car makers think of this a long time ago?

As Elon Musk has often said, the best part is no part. As in the more parts you can eliminate from production, the lower the cost of production.

Munro had the same door suggestion at Ford only to have it shot down. It was one of many management decisions that led him to leave.

Maybe they were thinking repair costs, or supporting their wire suppliers. Don't want a door ding to take out your rear lights(that's hyperbole).
