Tire mileage on the stock tires on my Prius prime ? I have 52,000 on my original tires .

Maybe we should start on a pool, on how many levels of the 5th gen (if and when it comes) will have a spare. Dibs on zero...

 

What’s everyone’s thinking as to how many years you should go on a set of tires (I.e., assuming sufficient treadlife).

when we lived in Az the rule of thumb was 5 years, particularly if you parked outside in the sun often, since UV and hear break down rubber.

Indeed, my mom in Az had 10 year-old tires on her vehicle (in my defense, I thought they were only 5 years old, and it was on the list to get them changed the next time I visited), and no tire shop she went to was willing to even add air in the tires for liability reasons (“you can do it; we won’t”). She had more than sufficient treadlife; the tires were just very old.

I’ve never seen as many blown out tires on the side of the road as when we lived in Arizona (although a recent trip to rural Texas was close).

however, in the Pacific Northwest, heat/sun is not really an issue. So, 6 years? 7? 8?

 

when I grew up in Michigan, my dad had a 55 gallon of pennies that he started 30 years prior. As a kid, if I wanted something (300 baud modem!), he’d point to the barrel and tell me to start rolling the pennies (back in the day before all bank branches had coin counting machines).

when we took the rolls to the bank to exchange for bills, the teller would break each roll and give the pennies a quick glance. Apparently there was a scam going on where people would get a ton of Canadian pennies, and put 48 Canadian Pennie’s in each roll, with a US cent at each end. Struck me as a lot of work for minimal gain. I could see quarters, but pennies?

 

Within about a week of getting our 2010, in November 2010, I was getting snow tires installed. They don't see a lot of miles, are garage stored with a proper tire cover, still have 7~8/32" tread depth, absolutely no cracking (I'm incredulous). I had them looked over by Kal Tire last fall, explained the age, and their opinion was they're still good. So I put them on.

And just put them on again yesterday. Counting on my fingers, this will be winter number thirteen...

Oh, and one of them had an outside-only plug repair, about 6~7 years back.

 

Get a load of this: I just replaced my original tires on my 2017 Toyota Prius at 90,000 miles. I might have gone a little more if it were not for the approaching winter and a sale. They just wore so perfectly, and I did rotate them without fail every 5K. Ecopia tires are great.

So, I replaced them with Michelins. I wish I replaced them with the same Ecopia. I think I took a small mpg hit. Someone here said that they recover some of that mpg after they wear a bit. I am hoping that is true.

 

I didn't get great life out of my EP 422 + tires on my Gen 3 prius. They were aftermarket tires though. Maybe the Japanese made OEM tires are better.

 

Apparently there are two version of the Ecopias. One has five ribs, the other has four ribs. I forget which comes from where, but that would account for the discrepancy.
