Something easily overlooked, especially when the damage seems minor enough that you assume everything is fine, is cracks in the bodywork. Long after a relatively minor rear-ender, I had a spare wheel well full of water sloshing around, a rusted and dead starter battery, and a taillight that needed replacing. Since fixing all of those were on my dime, it ended up costing me much more than the original accident. I'd suggest getting some flowable silicon, and enlisting a helper with a towel and a garden hose. The cracks are most likely to be at the top of the hatch, under the rubber trim strips.
I just got the email from the adjuster. I don't have the breakdown but they are sending me a check for 1,295.95. I'm guessing they are repairing the front bumper.
Well I am afraid to try and push down on the bumper to open the back. What do I do if it will not close? There is a decent back bumper in my color at a local junk yard so I can save money there. I need be able to open and close the hatch. so tha at least needs to be fixed. I amsure I can get the bumper fixed for cheaper than 1295.00 On a side note A elderly lady pulls up next to me with a rav4 hybrid. She tells me she had a 2010 prius and it was the most trouble free car she eve had. She traded it in because she needed a bigger car for the grand kids. She misses her prius.
Won't be a problem to push down when opening or closing the hatch. Bumper is very sturdy. Trust me, I'm just in the process of installing mine. Surprising how easy it is to take off and install. Instructions attached.
OK so if I push and it opens and then I can't get it closed you gues can tell mewhat to do? There is a 3 week wait for the body shop.
Quite sure it is not the bumper preventing you from opening the hatch, the hatch lifts up and doesn't catch the bumper at all. The bump from behind may have just nudged the catch forward enough to make it harder to lift the hatch. If you can hear the latch unlock when you press the switch to open the hatch, try get your fingers under the bottom edge of the hatch and lift. Yes you may have to press on the bumper to give you enough room to get your fingers under the bottom edge.
update I got the car back from the body late Friday. there was a lot more damage to it then originally posted. It needed a new latch lock so I don't think I could have shut it if I pryed it open. I'm not sure if I should start a new thread. here is the question. prior to the accident, I have never seen any water in the spear tire well. The body shop told me there was water there and they removed the plugs. They thought was it was because of the accident and the misalignment of the bumper. I told them were it was common to leak from and the fix. They did not think it could do that and felt the plastic covers would break in the cold if they were removed. I attached some pictures of the repaired bumper. Do you think there is a chance water could be coming in from the hatch? The body shop wanted to leave the plugs out but decided to put them back in. should I take them out? It is possible to silcon all around the hatch? thoughts and opinions please. That rear hood is huge...you need to determine where the water is coming in, which won't be easy. I'd dry it all out, including the black silcone all around, then close it and, section by section, run water over it and open and inspect for any water inside. Hopefully, it's just a small area you can plug up with some extra sealant on the bottom and/or top part. Any good body shop should be competent on doing this...you could call whoever fixed it and ask.
Its leaking from where they all leak in the upper hatch valley corners. Very well known issue. use the search forums link up top search the g2 forums for : leaking roof The cracks run up the 2 valence valleys too.You see the 2 black plastic strips that run up the sides of the roof? Just pry them off they pop right off and back on. You will see numerous cracks running from the hatch valley up that valance valley. There's water in the 12 volt battery well too btw. The body shop felt that if they pryed the plastic off if would crack in the cold. He was is disbelief when I said it was a common problem. He did not see water in the battery well. Maybe it is just easier to put silicon in all the know leaky areas. Lind
IT rained a little yesterday. This am, the rug in the hatch area was damp. I pulled the spare tire and lo and behold, water. The started battery doesn't look like its wet at all. So if the rug is wet, where should I be looking?
