Canadian Tire Eliminator Ultra AGM Battery for Prius (w/Pics)

    Don't have a charger. Maybe I will buy one later this year. I didn't charge it last time.

    Also, my multimeter maybe showing lower voltage. The Canadian tire rep measured 12.45V using his CCA tester.

    the problem is, the car only maintains the current charge. and then it drains while off.

    that's not good for the battery. best to charge it as soon as you can. canadian tire should charge it for free. a new agm battery is close to 13 volts.

    SaskBattery recently quoted (via email, this battery NOT showing on their website), $229 CDN, for the OEM Yuasa (S46B24R-GS). That's with free shipping (presumably just within Canada), no core charge, and (if it's per my last purchase) only GST (5%?) levied, no PST ((7%?):

    My 12V finally died on my 2009 prius with 230k kms. Replaced with the motomaster. Easy swap. The vent tube fit ok, not as good as stock but it's in there. I might have done something wrong, not too miffed about this.

    Not sure it will last as long as the Yusa but need the car to get to work and dealerships weren't open today. The old battery measured 9.8V! a few hours after removing.

    oops just realized this is for gen 3

    Thanks for your comments. I found the Canadian Tire battery (now 271.99 +20$ core charge), and I emailed Sask battery. Lets hope they have something hidden away for me. Other than those two sources I dont know many other places to get a new battery from in Canada. Perhaps the dealers have them.

    I emailed SaskBattery and they quoted me at CAD $219.00 including shipping for a new battery. They stated they couldn't give me a brand name but that it would be the same specs as the Yuasa battery with the correct posts. I'm assuming this is the same battery Canadian Tire or Costco sells, probably a no-name brand that people slap their own branding on. I went ahead and ordered it. Will report back on exactly what I get.

    Okay my $219 CAD (inc. delivery) battery just showed up from Sask Battery. Attached are some pics. Anyone want to weigh in on the specs as compared to the OEM or YUASA battery? Is this a good buy?

    The higher CCA than Yuasa probably means some reduction of Amp Hours. I'm completely out-of-my-depth, but have heard that as one increases the other (typically) decreases. FWIW, the OEM Yuasa's have lowish CCA and better than average Amp Hours.

    That said, the CCA is the same as our Optima Yellow Top (purchased from SaskBattery as well), and it's still going good, 7+ years on. I baby it though: only 3K kms usage yearly, and spends pretty much all down-time on a CTEK charger.

    See what it's volts reads, install it, see how it goes, report. If you really want to test it, something like Solar BA9 will do that. Automotive retailers selling batteries usually have pro-level testers of that ilk, and will usually test for free.

    Do you have decent smart charger? If so I'd do a session first. Clean the cable clamps before install.

    I'd dub the Toyota style hold-down bracket the worst possible design btw: ANY variation in battery height cannot be accomodated. Be prepared to either shim the battery up, or put washer(s) under the bracket's points of contact with car body.

    The CCA rating has no relevance in a Prius as the 12v battery does not start the engine and is never asked to deliver a high current. What is important is the Amp-Hour rating which is not shown on your battery.

    That generalization of ampere-hour capacity vs. CCA is true only assuming equal physical size. Making the plates thicker but correspondingly less numerous helps durability but not CCA.
    Yes, the original battery emphasizes capacity over CCA, because CCA is irrelevant in a Prius.

    It's probably a chinese battery. Looking at the label, it's not a quality print job.
    That's your first hint. Only a 3 year waranty? OEM is 7 years.... for a few dollars more.

    I checked OEM battery price with nearby Canadian dealership, within the last 6 months: they’re asking $340 (CDN).

    Tested the voltage on the new battery - 12.73 volts. I dont have a battery charger, though I see how it could be useful I dont feel like spending the money at the moment.

    I will report back on how the battery survives the winter. Seeing now that maybe i should have ponied up the additional 100$ for an OEM. Or maybe it won't matter.

    Thanks, Mendel for you support and comments. Got the new battery installed Very easy. Dimensions were extremely close to the original and the mounting bracket worked fine. Took the car for a short drive. There certainly were a few abrupt engine revs and I lost my radio settings but after a few minutes of driving car seemed to be its normal self.

    Yeah that’s something I’ve noticed too, think the car is reestablishing some parameters.
