If that was so, you could sold it to purchase more TSLA.

Isn't it amazing with all the technology and new BEV's - Prius Prime sits at the top for efficiency after all these years.

The Prime sits at the top of only the gasoline pile. The Model 3 beats it on the electricity pile.

According to EPA testing, but not according to real-world testing, where the Prime is quite a bit better than the Model 3.

Am I misreading this .gov report on Prime efficiency? Not too shabby for a car that is cheaper by more than $30,000

And lose more money? Down 23% in the past year.

Of course he will cite depreciation but then the car he sold would have benefited from the same no cars built and want that MPG craze.

    My experience:
    • 72 mi EV in 2014 BMW i3, 18.3 kWh
      • $2.20 electricity
    • 72 mi in 2017 Prime, 8 kWh + 47 mi gas
      • $0.96 electricity + $2.90 gas = $3.86
So the Prime cost for 72 miles is 75% more expensive than our 2014 BMW i3-REx. The Prime was worse at temperatures below 55 F.

    Bob Wilson

ps. My other car is even more efficient over 72 mi than the 2014 BMW i3-REx.

With two drivers, we needed two cars. We got more value from the Model 3.

That's a clever use of very specific conditions to favor the BMW i3 Rex. I see the trip is exactly the same as the range of the I3 without running the REX. It also uses only the cheapest electricity (charged at home) for it's ride.

The Rex model gets only 117 MPGe compared to the Prime's 133 MPGe, so the Prius is over all more efficient. Make the trip a bit shorter (Say, maybe 30 miles) and the tables turn in favor of the Prius. Make the trip a bit longer ( say 125 miles ) and the Prius again has the advantage. Having a supercharger available at the halfway point would help the BMW get home again, but the higher cost of the supercharger would make the cost per mile higher than the Prius overall.

BTW, the 2014 BMW retail price was $46,000 with REX. compared to the Prius Prime in the mid 30s. That extra $10,000 adds a lot to the cost of ownership.

depends on who's driving and at what speed. That's why you differ with the EPA's stats (& that's OK), as EPA is based more on the average as well as lead foot & gentle foot drivers. If a manufacturer sends phony estimates - they get the (you-know-what) sued out of them.

It was running diesel gate cheat software too. Never mind the fact it was only a little 2-seater

My bike is far more efficient than the Prime and is over $20k cheaper;)

My e-bike was $950 and gets about 2,000 MPGe. It's my primary transportation now, at least by trip count.

    :)
There have been several studies that show that the human body is a fairly inefficient engine, even when using it to move a bicycle or other wheeled vehicle. You have to feed a lot of carbs into the human in order to drive a simple street bike 10 miles. On the positive side, the human becomes much more aerodynamic over time if you give it neither food nor water. On the downside, the power output drops quickly when you do that.

My car uses between 200 and 250 watt hours to move a mile, and it can do it for a long time. Looking at Bike Calculator, it seems that 240 watts will get you going about 20 MPH.

As for the day to day costs, My yearly maintenance and fuel amounts to $45K a year, give or take. The car is much cheaper than that. :)

It's an e-bike. "e" stands for "electric". Most of the energy comes from my solar panels, not from my body. That which does come from by body would be consumed anyway on a stationary exercise bike instead, for health purposes.

So, you can move one mile for 240Wh while the bike can move 20 miles for the same amount (240 watts for an hour). That's about right - an e-bike is 20 times as efficient as an efficient car.

Well, suicide is the lowest-cost and lowest-environmental impact option, if those are your only goals.

Said by someone who reminds us on every thread how great his car is for his particular choice of trips to his cherry picked destinations

    For example:
Well my trip needs include transporting four 50 lbs suitcases so the e-bike is not going to work unless you make multiple trips. So it is a fail.

Just curious, how long can you travel at 20 MPH unassisted? I used to be able to bike (as a teen) 20, 30 or more miles a day on the San Francisco peninsula. I can no longer remember how fast I used to go.

Edit: I started my previous message before the e-bike was mentioned. It does indeed change things a bit. :)

What is its official U.S. EPA score, on today's scale? Not just what some Euro hypermiler could get.

It never received a U.S. EPA score? Even before Dieselgate? I wonder why ... (And if it did, I'd be translating it to gasoline-equivalent before comparing to gasoline cars.)

This is what I used, from the EPA's "Power Search" page:
