Leaky Intake Manifold

    After my 2014 Prius started presenting “check hybrid system” light repeatedly, especially after periods of battery stress (long periods of uphill driving, long idle times waiting for accident ahead to clear), my local Toyota dealership diagnosed the problem as a leaky intake manifold. My Dr Prius app also showed a P0A0F code when the light came on.

    There has also sudden swings in the hybrid battery charging (charges fast, discharges fast). The dealership says the battery seems ok. The battery is a warranty replacement battery that has 70K miles on it.

    Their price tag on manifold replacement is $1800 which seems a bit steep to me, particularly since I’m not getting any overt symptoms such as power loss or lower gas mileage. Also, why would the “check hybrid system” light come on for a manifold issue?

    Any feedback much appreciated…..

    It's probably just he gasket... About $10. Fairly easy to do yourself with a few tools...

    Just to clarify, Lagunitas is a city in the USA?

    So they're saying the intake manifold itself is cracked or compromised in some way, needs replacement? It's not just one of it's connections, a leak at a gasket or hose?

    Suggested retail price: $315.91 USD

    Here's my total price through Amayam, in CDN dollars, and converted to USD:

    Long story short, I could get that delivered, for $202 USD. Labour to swap intake manifold should not be more than one hour, say $100 USD. Heck, I could do it in under an hour.

    Bottom line, if they're just swapping an intake manifold, $1800 is about a grand over-charge. About the usual...

    If you're interested in DIY, it's not that hard to do this.

    Step one though, would be to verify it's leaking. I think you could test if you were to remove it, tightly seal the intake ports, pcv, evap throttle body and MAP sensor openings, then apply vacuum to one port (say the pcv or evap). If it doesn't lose vacuum they're barking up the wrong tree.

    Dealership would replace all gaskets, which would add about $50~60 USD, still a wee bit short of their quote.

    Correction: not ECU but ECM, though after Google search 8966047752 is not listed, probably it’s 8966047751

    218,000, the engine was replaced by a used one at 210K….it had about 60K on it at the time…
