Occasionally the engine revs up at red light.

No error code nor knocking sound. Not warming up after start. HV battery not low.

Engine revving/knocking sound | PriusChat In this post it's mentioned through MG1 to get battery lower. I'm going to check it next time.

Are there any other possible causes?

1nZ is plentiful engine still made today in Prius C . Mines still great at 300K . I use a 1/2 quart bottle Twice in 10K changes . Oil comes out a wee bit browner than at install. Not worth talking about for 300K . I think she will make 666. No issues .

This is with fully warmed up engine, decent amount of hybrid battery charge. I'm not that familiar with second gen, but don't they normally shut down at red lights?

Yes like immediately mine will shut off before I get to the full stop at the light and I haven't started slowing down a mile from the light either I generally run up on the stop or the trouble and that's that engine shuts right off push the park button get out of the car it's been off already for seconds The Gen 2 is actually real swift about that kind of nonsense.

If you just came down a hill and your hybrid battery indicates it's at full charge, the computer will spin the engine to dissipate some of the full charge to protect the battery pack.

Of course, if you're getting unusual revs pulling away from the stop light, that's a different problem.

I've also noticed the engine will "sometimes" keep running, with good amount of charge, on a hot day, maybe after lower speed driving around. Could be to dissipate heat or something.

There are other reasons why the car would run the ICE besides charging the HV battery. Top of the list would be if the climate control is set to a higher temperature than ambient.

Thanks. That's likely the case, the last occurrence happened at a redlight after a downhill. I'll keep an eye on it.
