Once I check exactly which year mine is I'll confirm with you.. I'm pretty sure I have a 2020 engine and it fits in my 2012...

I've checked some pictures and prius prime and prius base 2021 engines have totally different oil filter and oil filter mount in comparison to 2017 engine. So I'm curious will 2021 engine work for gen 3?

The different oil filter configuration doesn't matter. If anything it's an improvement.

    Asking for advise.
    1. Doesn't know which line connect to the goose circled on the first picture. This line goes from water pump to the heater core according Dave Hanson diagram.
    2. And where should be connected the hose with red tape on it. Goes out of the throttle body.

If it's 2zz based twill fit n bolt up elec and water lines to be sorted like putting 3S beams engine in into a modded Rolla. Fun but a bit of work .

My 2010 engine has burned oil since 120k and only gets 42 mpgs. I'm thinking my mpgs will increase with a Gen 4 engine.

It might get back up to the what 49 or so advertised mileage . My 1Nz gen 2 has always got 47.1 as advertised new . With 320K on it today . Awfully expensive change out for a few mpg tho . But if damaged mite wanna.

You're absolutely correct, it's not financially worth it for just a few mgs. But, I would rather replace the engine on my time vs it blowing out randomly while on my way to work on a Tuesday. I'm casually looking for a good deal on a Gen 4 and may tackle it this Fall.

I'd say start checking the JDM importers like I said these engines should be starting to trickle into the country and fairly good numbers The Gen 4 that is the two z has been here a long time but the Gen 4 2 z not soo much .

This is a nice and important thread. Is there a documented, PDF version of this swabs available?

New to this thread and looking at what to do about blown head gasket and leaky engine in my 2012 Prius V @ 185K.
The 4th gen low miles engine is an intriguing option, but even a lower mile replacement would be workable.
Question: Is there a good mechanic/shop in the Vancouver or Seattle area that would be trustworthy to source parts and do work?

You need a JDM.import engine . In the US it's hard to find the 65-70,000 mi generation anything Prius engine they'll generally have well over a hundred and still be priced ridiculously high just for comparison delivered to my door Gen 3 engine with about 70,000 on it was 1200 dollars. In the USA I could have spent 15 for double the mileage easily.

Can you be more specific? The bending and the repinning?

You use the 3rd gen exhaust, egr cooler, valve, piping and wiring.

3rd gen EGR components end up free spanning from exhaust manifold to intake manifold, just pass by the side of engine without connecting. There’s something on corner of gen 4 engine that needs to be ground off to clear.

Repeat after me: there is no repinning. There is no pinout difference between Gen 3 and Gen 4 EGR valves. The "repinning" suggested at the start of this thread might have come from noticing a change in the wire colors, but only the colors changed, not which pin does what. Anybody who does the repinning hasn't done anything but make the EGR not work.

The repinning has been known bogus since May 2020 but still keeps getting mentioned, sometimes because we haven't found every thread that talked about it.

Sounds like keeping my gen3 engine was a good thing. They are having apparent issues w 2 z open deck still . Even after shields rings etc . Yikes.
