My prius (2013 Gen 3) I assume has NMh batteries. Are years going forward going to go with lithium? People are quizzing dealers about replacement costs and getting battery pack quotes in the $20K + range.
I get that they unload power quicker, but does a Prius actually need it?

Can you imagine how difficult it will be proving authenticity in the aftermarket with those prices?

Only car that I've heard of that has a battery pack replacement cost that is $20k or more is a Tesla. The battery pack on my old Gen 2 was almost $4k to replace. I'd say the battery in the Gen 4 would be about the same price or at least in the ballpark. I wouldn't go with anything other than OEM battery pack, unless I was planning on selling the car almost immediately after replacing, then I would go with aftermarket or a reman unit.

The Gen4 Prius uses Lithium Ion batteries - except for the AWD version.
The Lithium Ion batteries are smaller and lighter. So, that directly benefits mileage and range.

The Gen4 AWD still uses a NiMH battery, because Li-ion looses more capacity in cold weather. Imho, also likely because of the lower cost, and to keep the AWD version at a more affordable and attractive price.

Fwiw, the Gen4 (plug-in) Prius Prime's Li-ion 8.8 kWh battery pack is ~~$12K for new, ~~2K for used.

As @alanclarkeau kindly pointed out, there have also been fourth-generation, 2WD models with a Ni-MH battery, sold in the U.S. as Prius One and Prius Two, in Japan as the S grade, and in Europe, Australia, and elsewhere, all with basic model code ZVW50. For 2WD models with a Li-ion battery, the basic model code is ZVW51.
At this writing, the U.S. list prices for HV batteries for fourth-generation Prius cars are all about $2,750, excluding labor and refundable core charges, regardless of whether it’s an Ni-MH or Li-ion battery. For Prius Prime models, the HV battery list price is $9,980, but that’s still not $20,000, even with labor.

Gottem. Then again, I would've looked into how much a battery replacement would cost before buying a Tesla. If regular ICE powered car people only understood that the battery pack on a Tesla is huge. I honestly don't see how California is gonna go all new EV only cars by the middle of next decade when the infrastructure to recharge them barely exists and the power grid can barely provide power during the summer.

For later Prius Plug-in models (2012–2015 production), the list price is also $9,980.

Why do you call them ‘later’?
    Wasn’t 2012 the first year?

That sounds about right - I was told a year or 2 ago that a Gen III was about AUST $3800. I can't recall if that was fitted or just supply?

There was a 2010 model that was produced in small quantities and equipped with a different Li-ion battery (345.6 V nominal). The Emergency Response Guide (PDF) shows some of the other differences.

Ah, that explains why I sometimes see weird PiP-ish parts in the parts catalog when I'm looking for a 2010. That had been puzzling me.

It’s a bluff by Newsom for prez. In 2032 he will be termed out and so will the legislature. And I doubt SCOTUS would sanction such a mandate.

I guess I was not to clear. Everyone is talking about lithium, as if it is the end of Nmh.
I figured mine was Nmh, since no one talked about the Gen three battery composition.
I like to know these things going in, and dealers never tell you anything unless you ask.
