Here in Virginia stealing catalytic converters is a class 6 felony with minimum 1 year jail time. However, stupidity has no limit. They get one- two hundred dollars for the catalytic converter and risk one year jail.

The virginia law is new only 43 days old

The upside is defending yourself against a felony in progress versus a misdemeanor offers new opportunities

The price of the catalytic converter with inflation went up to $2442.18 in just one year.

My Toyota dealer is charging $3430 parts and labor to replace the catalytic converter. The parts cost $2871 including catalytic converter, oxygen sensor, two seals front and back, 2 bolts and 2 springs. The approved labor is $559 with 4.3 hours at $130 per hour.

This $3430 is the insurance negotiated price. Originally dealer asked for $3800. My deductible is $500 so I will put everything OEM.

I hope they will not target my brand new shiny OEM catalyst again. The risk of loosing it is very high. Maybe the people that stole it the first time will come back or dishonest dealer employees will give my address to other crooks.

I would but the insurance is paying the dealer directly. It is not as easy at it sounds to get a dealer price from the insurance and get the check in your name.

If I did not have full coverage I would buy a $700 magnaflow to avoid check engine lights for several years.

Insurance companies are more likely to pay the dealer or repair shop, if the car is leased or financed.

True. After 16 years and 3 dead bodies with a few miles of my place I moved my family out of Colorado.

Edit. Sorry. 3 bodies within 7 weeks the third worked at my Walgreens… she was the daughter of my wife’s ex housemate…she bleed out on the floor of the break room… a mile from home. My daughter and I were in the store the day before. 3 days ago there was a double stabbing on Dancing Horse drive just 6 hours down from where we lived on our street. I dead another in critical. Also had a power meter cut off the back of a house on Dancing horse 2 weeks earlier. Theives steal power meters to run electricity for marijuna grow houses. Pot RUINS your state… don’t vote it in.

Does anyone know what the most cost effective way to go about replacing a 2012 Toyota Prius, I had mine stolen and unfortunately my insurance does not cover it, I will be paying out of pocket. Thanks
