2023 Toyota Sequoia will be All-Hybrid

    Highlights

    Will use the same power plant as the 2022 Tundra Hybrid: i-FORCE MAX across all 5 grades, 437 hp, 583 lb-ft of torque

    9,000 lb towing capacity

    3-row SUV will have a novel sliding third row with adjustable cargo shelf system.

    10-speed 2WD or 4WD for SR5, Limited, Platinum and Capstone grades. 10-speed 4WD only for TRD Pro grade. Like the 2022 Tundra, the Capstone grade is the highest grade.

    No details yet on dimensions, ground clearance or MPG. Being made on the same line as the Tundra, it would be interesting to see how MPG compares.

    Have Tundra hybrid MPG numbers been released? Fueleconomy.gov only has the ICE models posted.

    Toyota just updated their Tundra MPG for the i-FORCE MAX from an updated version (2/1/2022) of their specs:

    4x4: 19/22/21 for all non TRD Pro grades
    4x4: 19/21/20 for TRD Pro

    The F150 hybrid ratings (city/hwy/combined mpg).
    4x2: 25/26/25
    4x4: 24/24/24

    I think it is smaller than the Sequoia, but here is the Explorer's.
    RWD: 27/28/27
    AWD: 23/26/25

    Truck beds just hurt fuel economy.

    Finally, they're addressing this longstanding pernicious motive power deficiency, even if it does look like a lackluster phoned-in tally this time around.

    I can only hope it's enough to bridge them into the 4-figure torque segment before the end of the decade.

    Our children's safety depends on it.

    Yeah. Wow. Toyota is using the hybrid tech in Tundra/Sequoia primarily as a power boost strategy. Fuel economy is only up 2 MPG over the gas version of the 2022 Tundra. This is a disappointment to me, but certainly not the only thing I dislike about the new Tundra/Sequoia.

    It's because these trucks might actually need to do truck things. Power-split hybrid systems have always seemed lacking on the hauling and towing front, and they don't get great fuel economy if mated to a larger engine.

    For people that don't need a truck that does truck things, there is the Highlander and Sienna.

    EPA MPG (city/highway/combined): 2WD - 21/24/22
    4WD - 19/22/20

    2022 V8 EPA MPG: 2WD - 13/17/15
    4WD - 13/17/14

    7 MPG gain for the 2WD and 6 MPG gain for the 4WD or a 47% increase for the 2WD and a 43% increase in MPG for the 4WD. So it’s more powerful, has better gas mileage, more towing power (28%), better headroom, but have to sacrifice some cargo room, ground clearance and leg room not to mention there’s about a not insignificant $7,800 increase (SR5 2WD). The increased headroom makes for better access to the rear seats.

    I'd be a little circumspect with that news. It highlights that Toyota's full frame trucks were thirsty beasts compared to Ford and GM.

    2021 model MPG, Ford is a V6 turbo and Chevy a V8
    Expedition, 2WD - 17/23/19, 4WD - 17/22/19
    Tahoe, 2WD & 4WD- 16/20/18

    The new Sequoia will best them, specially around town, but it isn't a huge. Then it looks like the Expedition will be getting a hybrid. the F150 one bests the Tundra. The Tundra actually needs the hybrid to match the non-hybrid F150.

    Toyota had let the efficiency of their trucks languish for years, with the old Tundra actually being a step back. While Ford and GM were working to match the gen1 Tundra.

    Measurements are in inches. And include Moonroof in 2023.

    Surprising since they lowered the overall height but they also lowered ground clearance as well. They also made the 3rd row seats slide forward and back an impressive amount.

    The Expedition with V6 turbo is a little less than the Sierra; a few hundred pounds with both being 9000 min.
    The Tahoe with V6 diesel is just over a thousand less, and the V8 is lower still.

    Yes, that is surprising. I think perhaps the secret sauce is they lowered the seats.
