Looking for Tire recommendations for my 2020 Prime

At 37k and looking to replace my tires now. Was browsing Costco tires. I saw Bridgestone turanza quiettrack tires and Michelin defenders. Was looking at the threads and seems most people recommend the defenders. In terms of durability, ride quality, and road noise which is the better choice between the two?

 

"At 37k and looking to replace my tires now." dang, I'm at 56+K and if my front hadn't been a bit out of alignment and/or if I'd been rotating etc I'd still have estimated another 10K before REALLY needing new tires.

I'm probably gonna go with Defenders from Costco because of no spare in Prime so loosing a tire could become a big deal. Defender's sidewalls seemed quiet stiff which I've been told is sign of a good handling tire.

I'll almost always wear earbuds so noise less of an issue and I don't mind leaving the (supposedly noise producing) racks on.

 

Wow 56k miles on original tires? I currently have toyos. Don't know if mine will last that long

 

My Douglas brand tires lasted 150,000 miles and they only cost me $38 each installed at Walmart. They're the best tires I've ever had in the rain And I felt I could have gone another 30,000 miles but I just wanted to try a different tire. Wish I kept the Douglas tires because hands down there were the best I've used out of 17 third gen Prius cars in our fleet

 

No tire will last 150,000 Miles, I can see maybe pushing 80,90k and 100k with a few of them. But 100k is a pipedream unless you are only on the smoothest of roads you can find with no turning ever.

Recently had to put new tires on my wifes 2022 Prime. I wanna say she was around 30-32k miles and in need of an alignment. We opted for Continental Control Contact Tour at Discount Tire. Have had Continentals on our other Prii(plural of Prius?) and a different Prime and have enjoyed them. Our local Toyo dealer had buy 3 tires and get the 4th free but ONLY had Ecopias in stock, so I went over to Discount Tire and they matched the deal with the Continentals even though the Control Contact Tour is a Discount Tire exclusive(co-branded) tire. Really would have enjoyed more than 30k miles from the stock tires but needing an alignment and all the miles she puts on her car(we travel between Michigan and Ohio weekly) probably did not help.

 

Sorry; why do you have alignment issues on a 2022? Do you jump sidewalk curbs all the time, otherwise abuse the suspension? I would think that would be covered under the 3/36K bumper to bumper warranty. Just because your putting a bunch of highway miles on her; the alignment shouldn't wonder.
I bought a new first gen HCH, and noticed the handling was a bit squirrelly. I figured it was the battery pack in the back was causing it; because it was my first hybrid. A year later I got a recall notice on the rear end alignment. Look at the tires and sure enough, the rear inside corner was wearing thin. Got a new set of tires, around 25K miles and took it into the dealer for a free 4 wheel thrust alignment. Of course they wouldn't go half-sey on the new set of tires I had to put on it. The alignment was off; because I requested the alignment rack readouts before and after the alignment - for my records. I had them put the car back on the alignment rack, because one of the corners was directly on the edge of passing the alignment specs. I wanted all four corners in the middle of the range; and reminded them I had to foot the bill for a new set of tires; because of their assembly defect.

You should take it in and get it inspected, see if you have some sort of defective suspension component - instead of possibly burning through another set of tires.

FYI: I was doing some research on my set of Dunlap OEM tires. Make sure you buy the tires with the 91 or above load rating. It amazes me that most tire stores won't sell you a tire with a lower speed rating, yet simply ignore the tires' load rating. Most of the cheaper tires are rated at 89, too light for the additional weight of the battery pack. This is probably why some people are wearing out their tires so fast.

So I don't want to completely throw my wife under the bus on this one - but part of it could be her propensity for finding pot holes BUT, Michigan is notorious for poor roads. We tend to patch holes instead of repaving and its a small bandaid until snow comes down, erodes the patch/fill, and makes an even larger crater than before..... She did have our local dealer run an alignment scan as part of her recent oil change which is where we noticed it was off(but to your point - the car is only 7.5 months old). Her tires were not completely bald, probably could have gotten 10k more miles out of them if we had just done the alignment and she would do a better job of getting the tires rotated. Her paperwork noted she had a bulge on one tires that was causing the tire to lose air(which is what prompted her wanting the new tires as well).

Regardless, two weeks in with the new continentals - and she loves the ride on her Prime, has also had the alignment complete. Cheers~

 

Also part of the tread life equation is the roughness of the aggregate used in local road paving. Some parts of the country have very rough gravel they use in their paving that abrades tires quickly. Other regions have different material locally. I think that car with 150,000 miles on the tires was in the place they pave with ball bearings. (Maybe 150k on two sets of tires and a memory lapse?)

 

Love my Michelin Defenders... had like 7-8 sets between 2009 Corolla, 2010 Prius, 2013 Rav4, 2014 Rav4 and my 2017 PP. Great all around tire, good in wet, light snow and long tread life.

 

The Michelin Defenders are the best rated tire according to Consumer Reports for this vehicle. I put them on my Gen 3 and was impressed with the ride quality and quietness over the Bridgestone Ecopia tires I had before. I wish I had them on my Prime instead of the Yokahamas I have on now, not that I'm having issues with them.

 

Continental Pro Contact on both my 2007 Prius and 2005 Odyssey have been excellent. But for this car in future I'm eyeballing the Michelin CrossClimate 2. The tread pattern somehow offends my senses but I've seen so many rave reviews.

 

Aquatracs had same pattern. Doesn't work. Longitudinal sipes work best in rain. Defies logic. Need to be an Engineer to understand. Falken is one of the very best
