Front end damage - 2022 nightshade

    Ugg. Daughter collision.


    No airbag depoy. No injury, Collision with parked car. But car looks not good. Radar, sonar looks toast. Hood buckled. Not seeing any fluid leaks but didn’t check real close in the dark.

    Only 4k milage. This feels like it is going to be a lot of damage / cost. I don’t know - I never had accident in 35+ years of driving so this is new to me.

    just happened tonight. Call insurance in morning. Minimal damage to other car.

    any thoughts ?

    Does it still drive? Hopefully insurance covers it fine. Looks repairable, particularly with the price of cars at the moment. - though will need a new bonnet/hood which is ALUMINIUM, so probably expensive.

    You could avoid calling insurance, handle it with cash, and not risk raising your monthly insurance policy bill.

    My wife did something similar, but slightly worse, to her '17. It cost the insurance company about $5,700 and change. We had it fixed at the dealer's body shop. Looks like a new car now.

    She did drive it home, neighborhood streets. I wouldn’t want to drive it above 30mph - no freeway - for worry of the hood popping open.

    Checked it later last night, not seeing any fluid leaks, but as radar related system warnings come up: lane departure/assist, collision warning system, and the sonor. AC working, headlights working.

    Passenger front door has creak/snap sound when opening, there is an slight impingement with door and front side panel causing the sound( not sure if this is crash related gift from some door ding separate - I only drive it 1 or 2 times weekly and don’t normally open passenger door.

    That actually isn't too bad; assuming your fenders aren't bent. I'm not saying it's going to be a cheap repair; but it's mostly plastic up there. Make sure they replace the hood hinges. I had a similar hit a few decades ago. The dealer body shop charged my insurance company for the hinges, but didn't install them. My hood would vibrate at highway speeds. It was scary; because I knew it was replaced and afraid it would fly off at 70 mph.
    Then this same shop hassled me about it and I had to make an appointment to correct it, 3 weeks out. I was not happy; so when I looked at the work order - I saw they charged my insurance company for new hinges they claimed they installed. When I showed up 3 weeks later; they still hassled me about the issue - I pulled out the work order and told them they were committing fraud. Well their attitude changed right away. Their main gripe was painting the hinges to match the car color - I guess they are just black metal. But hey, they billed my insurance company for it.

    Good luck with the repair; everything should drive fine because most of that damage is cosmetic.

    Contacted insurance and took into body shop for estimate of work - nothing back yet.

    Meanwhile:
    1. why would the LTA (lane assist) system be reporting as unavailable? I thought it uses the camera near the rear view mirror.
    2. Is it possible it doesn't have line of sight over the bent up hood?
    3. The traffic sign recognition system is working - I think that uses the same camera.
    4. I am not surprised that pre-collision and dynamic cruise list as not available - the toyota badge is crushed so the radar cannot be working.
    5. Sonar is working except in center center-right - the site of the damage.
    6. Not sure if pedestrian detect is working - i doubt it - as I think those use the same sensors in front or if different ones they are crushed.
    7. Hybrid system is charging fine, ice cycles on/off as expected, I can run as EV for the duration as expected.
    8. headlights and flood lights and brights working
    9. I feel safe to drive it below 35mph - not taking it on the freeway with hood damage as it is.

    Jerrymildred, glad that got fixed up for you - did you have any damage to the radar for dynamic cruise behind the toyota badge?

    I'm not certain - my suspicion is, as with many systems in the PRIUS and indeed most modern cars - the central ECU and the Network Gateway are linked to many systems which we may not expect. This is what I've got:

    You should be able to determine if the safety latch (the thing at the front of the hood you have to release to get the hood open) is still latched. If so, you're safe to drive it

    Almost certainly from the collision. The fender was pushed back from the impact. I think you'll be shocked by the repair estimate! And you be doubly shocked at how long the repair will take. Everything is moving in slow motion these days. One final insult to injury, since the collision is your daughter's fault, expect your insurance premiums to take a hit. Good luck with the repairs

    Everything else is just....'stuff.'
    Since this is an at-fault accident and the damage is considerably higher than you will want to cash-flow this is an insurance thing.
    I'd make sure that they repair the car properly using OEM parts, and clear the decks for a hefty rate hike.
    You might have to adjust coverages and exclusions but I don't see this as a life altering event.....well.....unless it keeps happening.

    The good news is that since the car has been wrecked, you will have a pretty good incentive to keep it for a loooooong time, and it will keep saving you money at the pump.

    Thanks everyone for all the information and feedback. I'll update this thread as it unfolds.

    The master plan had been/probably still is: this 2022 will go to my daughter after college. I did that with my 2018 prius and other daughter. They get a known entity with 30 - 40k milage. They pay their own share of the insurance, I already told 18yo to start grabbing more shifts at work now and thru summer before college. Hard lesson cash wise - will see how big a jump insurance, i may have to split it with her if it doubles or more and depending on if she can carry a part time job when away at college.

    Our 2004 Sienna is reaching end of life - at least repair / sinking dollars wise now, for example environment LCD display now unreadable - have to change settings and adjust through 'feel' of air flow, direction and temp. - still running as backup vehicle for in town,

    Accidents, stuff and cash - need to keep proper perspective, and hopefully this makes gives her a lesson on how easy accidents can happen and improve focus.

    Just an update: car had to wait until June 1 to be dropped off for repair. Had July 6 completion estimate. Now July 15 and could slip further as part delays impact the repair effort.

    bad time to need repairs.

    also damage estimate around $9000 at this time

    OUCH!!!! Sorry I just caught this thread and I can truly feel your pain!!! That is the same exact Prius I have right down to the color. The repair cost are in line with what I suspected as I had a fairly minor scrape on the front bumper (forgot the low clearance and slid over a curve). No damage on any systems but they had to remove the front bumper which meant all those sensors had to be recalibrated. The repainting was a minor part of the nearly $900!!!

    Prius is ready at the auto body, picking up tomorrow am. I plan on requesting/insisting if necessary on test driving it before signing off on the repair (fyi - this is insurance paid repair).
    My main interest is testing the dynamic cruise control on the freeway given the damage to the front end, also checking the sonar sensors on the front. Anything else I should pay attention to? Any advice?

    Of course I know they did test drives and recalibration with toyota tech, but hey I want to make sure its right to avoid a comeback trip.

    I'm still a bit surprised at the $9000+ cost (last estimate i heard) given the visually modest amount of front end damage.

    I would take a close look at the headlights for even small cracks or such. Those Babies are VERY EXPENSIVE.
    One of the first things I did when I got mine back was to drive it into the garage to verify all the sensors reacted as they did before (we have a very small garage).
    Congratulations for getting her back. I trust things will be perfect once again.

    One other thought: your car was assembled in Japan so it wouldn’t have had any variations in fit around the different pieces (like the typical American assembly line). The shop that did my repair reassembled every piece so you could not tell it was ever disassembled. There should be no variation side to side or in any other direction.

    Check the LDA/Lane keeping/Sign reading to make sure it works if you have it. Second item to check would be auto-high beams, but gonna be difficult to check during the day.

    Thanks everyone - my 2022 prius is back home.

    I did a 35 miles drive testing the steering, handling, breaking, blind spot system, hybrid system, dynamic cruise, lane departure/keep assist, road sign reader, parking proximity sensors.

    Even had the pre-collision trigger when on cruise and traffic abruptly slowed/stopped - got the red warning and auto braking.
    Everything working as I remember pre-accident.

    Haven't tested the auto high beams or auto wipers due to daylight and lack of rain and need to confirm the rear cross traffic sensor.

    Exterior look perfect at first walk around and door impingement perfectly repaired.

    I guess I haven't done a visual on the head lights, signals, fog lights actually lighting up - need my wife home from work to do that.

    So it took 9 weeks and shop billed insurance $9700. The nine weeks includes 4 up front waiting for a slot to start repairs.

    I guess parts availability, staffing, and scope of repairs is what required 5 weeks. I think I saw around a total of 80 hours labor on the cost breakdown - roughly $4500 parts and $5200 labor.
