Meah - if USA can sell off National Strategic fuel reserves to Ukraine & China, why should any other strategic decisions be rational.

Doesn't surprise me a bit. There are people who think like you, and there are people who don't think like you. That's all. We've all learned that in the last two big elections.

Right! If you give something to someone, then you have to give the equivalent to everyone. That'll bring generosity to a screeching halt.

BTW, I love the author's sarcasm skills. Well done!

WOW, talking about "cutting off your nose to spite your face" - This is very sad. There seems to be a serious lack of Critical Thinking in our political structure!!!!!
You'd expect this type of behavior in 3nd world dictatorships and banana republics - Unfortunately; It looks like we're headed that direction.:(

Well, it is NC. I think they already have a high additional fee added to registration for plug ins.

Reminds me of a heroin addict not wanting to be around a friend anymore because they went to a methadone clinic to try to kick the habit.

If it was me, I'd strap a box to the pole and add a sign saying

    "CHARGES ยข.25"

I might forget to put a lock on the box.

The bill is worded so poorly that it would require free gasoline and diesel be provided at any publicly funded charging station, regardless if the electricity is free of charge or not. It does not require removing charging stations, so should also appropriate funds to install the gas pumps along side the charging station, else it's an unfunded mandate.

There's free level 2 and 3 charging stations at our airport included with paid parking. I walked over and checked them out last time I was there. There was only one space open, and only one car was charging. The rest were EV's (mostly Teslas) that were hooked up and not charging, or internal combustion cars taking up the spots. What's needed in my state are laws that fine motorist that park in EV spots that aren't charging.

As a free bonus, it would redistribute some of that electro-wealth to passing homeless persons. Sounds like a Win/Win to me.

"Through a pump to vehicles at no charge" You know a water pistol has a pump in it. Even a little bitty one. Might be a little slow but you would have full legal compliance.

I do have to admit that I've taken an EV spot on occasion w/o charging, when I couldn't find a parking spot.
What's needed is smart legislation. My work has a red and green lamps on the charging post along with parking space sensors. Your limited to 4 hours. If your not charging and/or your there for more than 4 hours, you get a ticket - I believe it's $75 fine. But since this is a semi-private garage, someone has to walk out there to ticket the car. I believe you get 15-30 minutes, if you don't plug-in. However long it takes for the parking enforcement to walk over and ticket the car.

Annual bonuses for the parking attendants???? :D:p

If you are going to go that far, you should go a few more steps and start at home. IMHO, we should fine any BEV owner who leaves his house without fully charging his car or motorcycle overnight. After all, they are the ones creating the demand for the extra public chargers.

The real cure for the tesla's that are just sitting there after they charge is pretty simple. After a suitable period, change to "car to grid" mode and slowly pull the obviously unwanted /unneeded power back into the grid for other users.

A very unpopular course of action to solve the freeloader/free parking problem would be to monitor the usage of the public use chargers, and those that are being used primarily as a fancy parking space should be removed so that EVERYONE can benefit from the extra parking space.

That's all well and good, but what happens when it takes over half the range to get to the airport? It does cost to park, probably more than what it cost to charge at home, so it's not like anyone is driving to the airport just to take advantage of the free charging stations.

Level 2, EVSE attract customers who are well off enough to appreciate a good value. Customers who don't take 3-finger discounts.

Make it universal for all EVs, not just Teslas, and we're both happy.

FYI, EVSEs also become more more expensive. Instead of passing AC to the car to rectify and charge the battery, it (or the car) needs to detect the grid AC and covert the battery DC to AC in phase with the grid. Then there is paying twice for the same kWh.

You pay for the kWh when you put it in the battery. Someone takes that kWh and the EV owner has to buy it back later.

The best setup for Level 2 EVSE is with a cable that reaches three parking spots located away from the business. It also works best if a counter-weight picks it up off the pavement.

Again, this might not be popular, but if you use more than 1/2 of your range to get to the airport, you might not be using the right transport. In every metropolitan area there are shuttles, town cars and limousines available. Often you'll find light rail stations that will get you to the airport too.

It does not matter if someone drives to the airport to take advantage of free charging stations. It does matter if people have been led to believe that there is charging available, only to find that people are parked there (and still plugged in) who will not be back for a day or two or more.
