Unsure how the windshield cracked, just observed it today. Apparently, it's been like this for maybe couple days and didn't pay attention since it was at the bottom of the glass. Follow the white line(crack is just below it)...Its from the corner of the right side and extend to the middle. Can this be repaired or best to replace? If replaced, recommend any places? or dealer?
it has to be replaced, you can only fix bb style holes. that will shatter eventually. do you have hud or anything? if not any glass place will do it at your home or work. contact your insurance first
Not sure what hud is - I live in Tampa, FL. I have collision and comp so will check with vehicle insurance firm.
I would call Safelite and ask for the cost if you self pay. Review or call your insurance to determine deductible for a windshield. Decide if a claim makes sense. Avoid the cheapest possible place as some use seconds with distortions in certain areas. HUD means heads up display, usually reflects in the windshield. You have one.
head up display, shows the speedo, etc. on your windshield like a fighter pilot, so you don't have to take your eyes off the road.
If you have comprehensive on your insurance policy, the cost will be covered minus the deductible. Some insurance policy waves are deductable for the glass replacement. So check it. The dealer usually outsources the glass work anyway, so taking to any auto glass shop will be fine.
If you have FULL coverage insurance, they will pay for the replacement. It won't be a Toyota windshield. And it will probably be a crappy one. It took MONTHS of cleaning and cleaning and using a razor blade to clean the crap off the glass so the rain wouldn't smear.... They will have to go to Toyota to get it set up CORRECTLY for the heads up display.
OK I get it now. Yes. I have HUD - it shows the speed on your windshield. I haven't taken it for a ride today so unsure if it still displays or not. Does having HUD make it worthwhile to goto someone like Safelite or can I take it to any mobile auto glass firms that come home and replace it? My Comp deductible is $1500 so not worth to pay for insurance but will ask my insurance ( Progressive ) and also check with local installers for self-pay rates.
Imho, go only to a Safelite location, or a Toyota dealership. Plenty of stories, articles, videos, on issues with bad/cheap windshield glass replacements. As others said, that needs to be replaced. Good luck!
I have progressive. They WILL pay for it. And they use Safelite. Just phone them and tell them and they will set up an appointment
Be sure to confirm they will use the replacement glass made for HUD. It is different from the plain glass. If they use the non-HUD glass, you will see a double image of the HUD projection, reflected to you from both the near and the far surface of the glass.
And if you have the technology package with adaptive cruise (which is excellent, btw) that adds another layer of complexity for replacement. Assuming you still live in Florida, you are probably OK not fixing it because Florida did away with car inspections in the 1980's. While Florida law states that a vehicle may not be operated with an an obstructed view of the road (take down stuff hanging from the mirror!) your crack is so low that it doesn't obstruct anything.
One caveat - I replaced the windshield in my 2014 Prius, and didn't pay attention to the replacement. When it was installed, I noticed that it had a black stripe, most likely to support the power cabling for a homelink/compass rear-view mirror. It's a little annoying, since I see it all the time. I may end up getting a dash cam, so I'll end up routing the cable up across the black strip.
Not yet. Called Progressive and they asked me to open a claim with Safelite AutoGlass. They were booked for 2 weeks out when I called them, will post as soon as replacement is in.
Got it replaced. If you have HUD, pls ask them otherwise they will install a plain glass - this is why I love this forum! Attaching before(top) and after(bottom) pic - there was a sunscreen strip at the top that's missing in the replacement glass but the HUD display works. Install time : less than 2 hours.
