I'm sure 99% this same subject has been discussed before, so here is my story. (The more data the merrier!)

So, it's started like more than 4 months ago with solid check engine light, nothing seems odd with the car. the light comes and goes. I did nothing.

Skip couple of weeks, I've had a big hit on the front right corner! (my car is left hand drive). Fortunately, the car is still functioning, the damage was body, frame, light and windshield washer reservoir.

2 weeks later I was going on road trip - did not repair the car, so I went below the car to fasten some of the undertray that came loose after the accident. Hit the road, and after like a minute, the dashboard is flashing with the message "STOP THE CAR WITHIN 0.5KM" or something like that, with the check engine light on!
So I stopped in the nearest gas station and checked below the car, maybe some wire has gone off or something, no! Turn it off and on, still. And the car is in limp home mode, barely moves. Until finally it worked with the check engine light on and a message "Visit The Dealer" always on the dashboard. I continued on my trip - more than 300KM - nothing feels wrong, and the message still there.
When I reached my destination, I tried the "disconnect the battery then turn it back on". And it worked! No warnings. And went back home and everything is OK.

The car still shows the check engine light every now and then. And now comes the high temp light! It pops solid then flashes for like 3 second and disappears! I check the car by myself, nothing!
Then I realized, this seems to happen only when accelerating on a hill! mostly high speed. Also, I can hear like something is loose and falling behind the dashboard, right as the light pops up!

Again I do nothing! this continues. But now I notice the coolant in the engine coolant reservoir goes down every now and then. I don't see any leak. Just add whenever needed. This goes worse week by week. But sometimes the reservoir empties in a day, sometimes in a week!

Three weeks ago I was driving slowly on a speed bump, and BOOM! the whole dashboard flashing with same message "STOP THE CAR WITHIN 0.5KM". I get home, disconnect the battery again, on and off, and the starts OK.

So just now I got the car to the dealer, they read the codes and told me it's the ICE water pump. They will replace it along with the thermostat.

I'll update here once I shakedown the car after the replacement :)

PS: the car is less than 6 years old, around 165k mileage when the issue first arose.

I'm only going to comment on your first symptom and action taken, because like you said, you have to start at the beginning. Almost everyone will agree that you have to scan for the codes whenever you get a CEL. Based on the results/codes, you can decide to "do nothing" but simply doing nothing without ever scanning codes is completely irresponsible and you deserve whatever you get after that.

    ooh; Harsh - but true.

I seriously doubt a replacement water pump & thermostat will solve your issue. Your water pump issue probably started 4 months ago; you've been driving around with an intermittently functioning water pump. You continuously over-heated the car and damaged the engine. Best and cheapest course of action, would be to replace the engine with a low mileage used one. I know labor cost over there are fairly cheap; but finding a capable shop with the proper equipment to overhaul the engine will be a challenge. Even dealerships only replace engines with 'crate' engines.

Good Luck, and I really hope it's just the water pump & thermostat....

You could really use a scanGauge or something that can monitor engine temps better. Sounds like you might have a leak as well somewhere as the coolant is going somewhere...Just saying. A simple OBDII reader with a cell phone are cheap and can keep an eye on your water temps and can also read Check engine light codes. Some on Ebay can be had for a simple $5 USD. Really need some more data because you have a lot going on with that Prius.

How many miles on the car?

If you're losing coolant but there's no visible leak, have them check the exhaust heat exchanger. They tend to fail and leak coolant into your exhaust pipe-- it happened to me, and was initially misdiagnosed as head gasket failure by the dealer. It's a known issue with the 2016 model year Prius.

Low coolant and/or air in the coolant lines from a leak would cause intermittent overheating, especially when going uphill or at high speeds, like you experienced. Would also explain the Check Engine light.

Got the car couple days ago with the pump and thermostat replaced. Did about 100km now, short runs, freeway with constant speed, high ambient temps... all good so far (y)

Having coolant is good, and having it move through the engine is even better. (y)
