Saw it may be coming with a 12 kw battery, up from the 8.8 presently. Any confirmation on this? That would be 45 miles on electric, a big change.
Where did you see this news? Also, I believe the Rav4 Prime comes with a 18.1 kWh battery with 42 mile of range, but of course the laws of physics plays into total range.
no, there is nothing. whatever you saw was runour or wishful thinking. first of all, there is no room for 12kw. they would have to do a complete chassis redesign. if that even happens in gen5, the price would skyrocket. they have enough trouble selling them as is.
I am not sure if we are going to have Prius Prime in the 2023 model year. It seems Gen5 Prius is coming, but there have been no words on the Prime version of Gen5.
Toyota did treat the Prime like a separate model, and introduced it a year after the gen4 Prius. They will likely continue that.
Alright, I have been waiting to get a car for a long while, if the consensus is that Prime is not likely to go to Gen 5 for 2023, I think I had better pull the trigger on a 2022...if I can find one.
Of course there is going to be a 2023 Prius Prime. It will likely be the same model as the 2022 Prius Prime, but there is a snowball-in-hell chance that it will be a redesign. Stay tuned for the month of August.
There hasn't been any announcement of a Prius redesign, and the Prime will likely come out a year after it.
Well, Europe gets the Corolla hybrid in three body types, with choice of two engines. Plus, there isn't any import tariff on it.
Not sure I agree that the Prime will follow the regular Prius by a year again. I think with Gen 4 it was an unplanned delay that caused that (such as last minute change to stuff a larger battery in, which would also explain the odd packaging). I believe the PP will be the lead flavour of Prius going forward, and likely drop the HEV version eventually, therefore I doubt they will dilute the marketing by launching it in delay of the regular Prius again. Also, the Gen 4 is now overdue on a 7 year cycle, while this is year 6 of the Prime, so on schedule for a refresh. There were also some Japanese leaks a few weeks/months ago suggesting a redesign and something about using a similar power train to RAV4 (!), but not sure how credible. Also, Kia just released some detailed they are upping their PHEV to 11KWh, so I would expect Toyota will follow something similar. My (completely speculative) guess is Toyota will unveil a redesigned PP at end of 2022 featuring a 10-11KW battery with better packaging and cargo room (under floor/seats battery like RAV4), stronger electrical motor and possible eAWD (optional? based on RAV4 rumour), some modest exterior redesign, and possibly a few more creature comforts (if budget permits), like a moonroof and/or memory seats (to match competitors)… and a price increase. Just my guess.
Pretty solid guess. Given Toyota's history, I'm actually doubtful about the feature content you listed for the Prime. Remember, it's based on the TNGA-C or GA-C platform (that houses the Corolla, CH-R and UX). The RAV4 is on the larger GA-K platform (Camry) so there's a weight limit for the Prime. If they add a larger battery, something's gotta give to keep the weight in check. Also, recall that Toyota is planning a FCEV Prius as well (ICE-based hybrid, not fuel cell I believe).
We'll see. I doubt the order I placed for a 2022 Prius Prime will be fulfilled anytime soon, especially given the rarity of the aqua color choice. Perhaps it will be a redesign and I will get to have a 2023 redesigned Prius Prime instead.
I suppose you are right about the feature content, probably more wishful thinking, lol. At this point, I have put a refundable deposit down for a RAV4 Prime about a month ago as “a long term investment, in case I get lucky” and one becomes available, while I wait to see what the ‘23 PP looks like and make a decision later. But I digress…
That would be sweet to get a 2023 instead. Interestingly, my dealership says it is a fairly long wait for a RAV Prime (about 16-24 months, which is not as bad as some areas), but a PP would be “only” about 6-9 months, so within the model year. Also, they don’t sell NEW vehicles above MSRP either, unlike some dealers.
