I don't know how it works on Camry. But for my Pathfinder, it is not the TPMS sensor in the tire that sends the position information. It is the car's antenna that identifies and distinguishes the individual sensor location. The same TPMS sensors are shared by many different models of cars, but in some, it works with auto-relearn and auto-reposition. And as I said repeatedly, the PP does not have auto-relearn or auto-reposition mechanisms on the car. Unless the service manual actually instructs the dealers to re-register the ID when the tire is rotated and it is diligently performed by the service dept, the position information is lost after a tire rotation. The same is true for DIY tire rotation without proper re-registration.
Where can you find wheel specific pressure information? I've dug through the app and the MID and the manual, and all I can find is a single warning light the indicates that one or more tires are low. I have a 2021 xle. Granted, this has surprised me because I have much older and much cheaper cars that have individual readings. Thanks
You can only find that because that’s all there is. The TPMS was originally designed to warn people that the tire pressures were low (it all started when a Ford small SUV had Firestone tires that failed because people weren’t maintaining the correct tire pressures and were experiencing blowouts). Each transmitter on the Prius has an individual ID that could provide a readout of each pressure, and maybe the computers have that capability, but there is no readout. The only time they need to be registered is when one is changed out for some reason. Resetting the system is only telling the system what is the base tire pressure so it knows if pressure drops beyond a specific amount (since front and rear tires have different pressure requirements). The TPMS doesn’t care what position the tire is on the car and doesn’t (on the Prius) tell you which one is low when it gives the alarm (probably assumes that you should check each tire, which is a good assumption).
It's not displayed in the car anywhere. Some people with the LE can get it in the Toyota app but that may be related to their smaller head unit for the radio. It seems to report extra data to the app that our larger one does not. The computers do collect that data and you can view it with one of those OBD2 devices like Carista. Presumably there's nothing stopping Toyota from displaying that in some way in the dash or radio screen. The question is whether the Prius has directional antennas to tell where exactly each sensor is on the car.
My Prii do not "know" where the tires are mounted. Using the Toyota app on my Android phone tells me the PSI in each tire, but it gets the location of the tires wrong when they are rotated. JeffD
Apps Carista will let you register new TPMS sensors, and old ones if they are needed to set their location. Such a system requires a second antenna to autolocate the sensors. GM had a manual method where each tire was deflated and reflated in turn. So simple DIY. By the time I got the Sonic, you needed an electronic widget to ping a location's sensor. I'm guessing it was for dealer appeasement. Leaving the second antenna off would save cost, but a break the bank amount, as Toyota puts the auto locate system in Camry LE's that don't have the wheel display. For a model that won't have the option at all, it is short sighted if you have an app to sell subscriptions for. It's because the SE has a dash display for tire pressures Looks like Toyota pinched pennies, and went one basic antenna. The Sonic didn't have a dash display, but really wanted to sell me an OnStar subscription where I could see the individual wheel pressures on the phone.
Did they start off in the right place? If so, re-registering the sensor ID's in Carista to the correct data field can fix it.
Back on topic, my advice is to relax. It seem you have no definitive proof that either of your concerns are real so maybe keep along with the "benefit of the doubt" attitude. Sure, you could go "full Karen" on a manager, who might then what? Rotate your tires again? Well, if they were actually already rotated, this is counter productive. Refund your money? It was free. Change your oil again, or give you a future credit? Why do you trust them to do it right a 2nd time.. Especially if you made a big fuss and now the manager is breathing down the tech's back. Unless you enjoy confrontation, it seems like you're expending a lot of energy for minimal benefit. If you don't trust them, next time plan further ahead and go to the highly rated dealer. Then again, it seems like there are 100s of ways to game reviews so I have a hard time giving reviews a lot of weight anymore. If a dealer is unscrupulous enough to lie about tire rotation or the oil used, they'd have no problem gaming their reviews.
with a subscription Carista allow reprogramming gen 4 regular Prius TPMS sensors. Prime only gets TPMS reset like on the Prime MID and no Live Data available either. Thanks for being clear on what you mean.
I say it again, I don't know how the TPMS locating works in Camry. And for this thread it is irrelevant. I am simply stating that OP's PP doe not have a TPMS location antenna. Unless the dealer did re-registering ID after the tire rotation, the location information is not accurate on the APP. Therefore, not seeing the change in the sensor location on the app does not necessarily indicate that the dealer did not rotate the tire.
Sorry The hits that came up in the searches with instructions on how to do did not spell out the difference.
I had the same problem with a ThinkDiag that Scotty had a enthusiastic review for. Turned out I couldn't reset the Primes TPMS with that one either. It has some bidirectional support, but it felt funky with manual turn on and off which overrided the cars automatic off and end of cycle ie; windows up down. And the code erase didn't look to be as accurate on first glance. Anyway, when I called support after searching over a thousand of the 80 thousand pages of the Thinkcar Toyota support section, I was told that the ThinkDiag didn't support the Prime. But did have support for the regular Prius that I could see while trying to register new TPMS sensors. Another reason I'm not wasting my time on a $50 techstream clone from china for the Prime. FixD wouldn't pair up or wasn't even seen by the phone when I tried that one in the Prime.
Jiminy Cricket, have we beat this topic to death yet????? This is getting as bad as the oil conversations: 5K, 10K, no, wait, NEVER. LOL
