I think you are confused on 2 points. The Keystone XL pipeline was to get tar sands oil to refineries in the US for processing before being sent to the gulf for transportation and sale to other countries. Tar sands is a particular dirty type of raw oil and the Canadians don't have the ability to process at the levels needed. The US does.

Energy independence means we, the US, made more oil than we consumed. Or at least we did, but not anymore. That gave us enough export to affect prices on a global level to the benefit of everyone worldwide. The price of oil at the time was 47/barrel. The price now is 121/barrel. At least the Saudis, Russia, Venezuela, Iran, and the rest of the oil producing nations are getting their fair share now right?

Interesting fact: Secretary of Energy, Jennifer Granholm, said last year that the pipeline was the most environmentally safe method of transporting oil and any other method of transport that would have a far greater environmental risk than the pipeline (May 11, 2021 from the White House podium). So here we are getting the same oil to the same places at a much higher cost by train, trucks and ships with a greater environmental risk.

This decision was never about environmental safety.

    hello
    I think your converter needs a tune-up;)
$2.10 CDN a liter equates to $6.20 USD per US gallon
1 us gallon equals 3.785 liters and 1$CDN equals $0.78USD

wow $2.10CDN a liter is very high , in my area it's $1.95CDN a liter

Yeah there is a “number”, to do it in one pop. My mistake was maybe trusting Google to be right up to date.

Well it was considering tar sands oil is thicker, acidic and corrosive and results in more damage to the pipeline and more spills, it already has had more than a dozen spills.

In general it is OK to be upset at fuel and oil and all prices, but know that the POTUS has little to do with oil prices and if you say he can do A, B, or C also know that it is a temporary fix that still won't satisfy people and won't help us reduce demand. Nobody blamed the last guy when gas got close to $4 in a good economy, of course we were constantly distracted by much bigger problems at the time. We don't need to make this a political gotcha to force more domestic production. My Prius is 15 years old and people said we were all idiots back then for buying one over a non-hybrid, but high fuel prices are nothing new and all other cars had to compete with better MPG thanks to Prius and high MPG vehicles.

To be clear I wasn't talking U.S. average, I was referring to me routinely hunting down the lowest priced quality gas and still paying close to $4/gal during the previous administration. It started creeping up the entire term and looked pretty high right before the Covid demand drop sent it back down and I never misplaced blame because that's supply and demand.

Thankfully gasoline hasn't reached $4 per gallon yet here. It's currently only $3.999.

So imported Canadian oil is being laundered to count as U.S. petroleum exports?

I'm also unsure why some of those Keystone 'exports' are being shipped abroad from the interior Midwest.
As I pointed out earlier, from EIA data and statements, while we have been on track towards that goal for a long time, we reached it only in 2020 and 2021, and did so that early only because the Pandemic recession cut domestic consumption more than production. Final results are not yet in for 2022, though we'll likely be a net importer this year due to economic recovery increasing consumption, then an exporter again next year as domestic production responds to increased prices. And this was projected based on pre-war prices. The new war should accelerate that production increase..
Hardly, as revealed by the black "net trade" line on this graph. The U.S. has really moved from a major oil sink to about 'net-zero', with nowhere near the net export levels of the world's major net exporters.

Here in the San Francisco Bay area you can Google it our first gas stations three days ago hit around $7.50. A gallon.

The difference in price from what we were paying before here in San Francisco at roughly $4.80 a gallon on a 10 gallon tank. Is what I pay for lunch at work so owning a Prius it’s no big deal.

$2.70 difference times 10 = $27 that’s only one lunch every couple days when you fill up your gas tank.

Now if you own a gas guzzling SUV or pick up truck especially a big work pick up truck with the two gas tanks and you have 50 gallons of gas to pump at $7.50 X 50 = $375 I would be complaining.

*Democrats* are the "party of billionaire elites" ?! Good grief...you people are off your rockers. Drinking the conservative kool-aid I see.

Frankly, the conservative underbelly is a vile, disgusting place. However, they operate in the shadows via 'dark money'. I can't believe you people are falling for the conservative propaganda...but plenty are.

FYI - One of several thousand articles that popped up with a simple search...

The Big Money Behind the Big Lie | The New Yorker

"Pillars of the conservative establishment, faced with a changing U.S. voter population that threatens their agenda, are exploiting Trump’s contempt for norms to devise ways to hold on to power. Senator Whitehouse said of the campaign, “It’s a massive covert operation run by a small group of billionaire élites. These are powerful interests with practically unlimited resources who have moved on to manipulating that most precious of American gifts—the vote.”

If anything, let's agree that there are billionaires on both sides...In my view the repub side is far, far worse because they are trying to undermine things that make America great...like..uhh...the right to vote. Please don't 'blame the dems' for every...single...thing.

Is this a political forum to figure out how vote and make political changes that will get us the cheapest fuel or is this a Prius forum on how to get good fuel mileage regardless of our political stance and fuel costs?

$4.16 per gallon at my last fill up, but still cost less than $30 total. My monthly gas bill is less than $10 higher than it was last year. I feel for the people who have to pay $100+ to fill up their vehicles, but I’m also glad I drive a Prius!
