    Just to clarify
Paying Russia for crude we could produce ourselves if DC had a clue is not smart

Between Covid and just shifting priorities, our 2010 is getting dusty. Putting 4K kms yearly, at most, well over a month between "fill ups", and that when the gauge has got to the median, so only about 18~20 liters, more of a "top up".

We used to do periodic shopping trips, always with the car. Now we do a lot more impromptu, on-foot, local shopping. Seem to be saving money with this approach too.

The car will often sit unused upwards of a week. It does require more attention paid to the 12 volt battery, but that's easy: I have it hooked up pretty much constantly to a smart charger.

It's not significant, was my point. I am fine with not buying Russian oil, but since oil is mostly fungible it would have little effect unless we also enforced a ban on other nations.

The reason(s) for this go back to the Merchant Marine Act of 1920.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merchant_Marine_Act_of_1920

In short, it is less expensive to import Russian oil to the US West Coast than it is to transport it with domestic shipping. You could argue that the law should be revised for today's reality, but large changes in infrastructure take decades.

This week I drove from the Diablo valley to lower Oregon. For the first time since buying the car, I set the trip-meter right after filling when I was still about 175 miles from my destination. Earlier this month I'd recorded 59.0 MPG on a 493 mile trip to San Diego but I did not remember to check the actual gas usage when I filled the tank. That trip was mostly traveling above at 75 MPH or above.

I'd heard rumors that the Toyota models were notorious about overestimating mileage by 10% or so. As a result I was not too enthused about the 59.0.

So I checked the real MPG for that last 175 miles at 65 MPH. I left Weed Calif with a warm engine, temperatures in the 50s and traction battery depleted. This part of the trip was entirely in HV mode, except when a long decline charged the battery sufficiently to get 5 or so miles of EV mode. I traveled over two mountain ranges, so there were a couple of spots where I accumulated some charge in the traction battery.

Attached is a photo of the dash as I cruised into Roseburg, Oregon. It's fuzzy, but it shows the total MPG for 469 miles was 50.5 MPG, and the last 178.7 miles was 69.5 MPG. I filled the tank and did the math. The dash MPG was within 1/2 percent of the real mileage. Over all it would be quite accurate as long as I make sure that the tire diameter matched Toyota specs.

Am I glad that I drive a Prius Prime? You betcha. Without AC, I'm getting a little better than 5 miles per kWh while on battery around town.

The notoriety is justified. At least for my third gen: calc’d is invariably lower mpg, on average around 7.5%.

I can drive 60 miles on that 40 cents. 80 in the summer.
Can’t wait for the EV vs ICE initial prices to equalize in a few years.

My son was telling me (last night) that gas is more expensive in California right now, then here in Vancouver, BC.

Wow, just checked gas buddy: at Chevron near us regular is $1.99 CDN per liter.

Not sure he's right: seeing $4.50~5.00 USD per US gallon right now, again with gas buddy.

I saw no sub-$5 gas in the Truckee - Donner Summit area (CA) today. But did see $5.99.

I did fill up at Costco in Reno for $4.30/g this morning, the same as last night's closing price. There was a long line minutes after opening. Last night, only a single other station on the NV side, well north of town, was even close to that low, most were in the high $4s, some over $5. Tonight, gasbuddy shows that Costco up to $4.49 before closing time.

Clueless Joe will pay Russia for oil but not promote domestic E&P. Pathetic.

You might be looking at small independent gas station prices compared to Chevron gas prices, which is always more expensive. In the Los Angeles area Chevron is now $5.69~5.89/gal for regular gas.

Here is a current gas pricing index by AAA that averages all gas station prices by area in CA for today. That includes small independent stations with the bigger brands. Pretty distressing the huge rise in such a short period of time. And the prices have not peaked yet.

    AAA Gas Prices

Of course Joe released 30mil barrels of crude late last week from the strategic reserve, which amounts to 1 1/2 days for the US. It didn't slow the inflation of gas prices at all. At this moment congress is trying to force the administration to halt all oil purchases from Russia, which is still happening amid the current conflict, so the expectation is another round of gas price increases if that happens.

With so much of everything we buy being delivered by rail, ships, and trucks this will have a bad effect on inflation for just about everything as a result.

Sheesh! I went out to buy new shoes and planned to get gas at the last station before I got home so we could leave Thursday for a mini vacation in St. Augustine. While I was in the store, everyone raised their gas prices another 20 cents. I think that's the most per gallon I've ever paid at $4.199/gallon. Thankfully, I only needed a little over 6 gallons to top it off. That's more than what I paid last time for almost 8 gallons.

Gas Buddy appears to be "broken" up here, but over the weekend it was around $2.10 a liter CDN. I think that converts to $5.05 USD per (US) gallon.

Still, we filled up maybe 2 weeks back, and it's still on the full mark lol, so I don't get too excited.
