Good news. Yes it’s about weight rather than aerodynamics. I believe you can’t combine these items. Moonroof / full leather seats / awd. In any combination

Just information for you:

You will need a spare, I took the temp spare off my 2014 before purchase of my 2018, the spare fits perfectly, you would need the spare and the lockdown. To make the trunk level with the temp spare you can see these threads, or if you want the parts, these would be the parts you need, just depends on how much you want to spend, you could also try to negotiate with dealer for trading parts off a Prius on the lot with spare if they have one, make parts part of the deal, or parts at cost as part of the sale.

It's crazy. I always figured that the smaller tank in the AWDe version was due to a space limitation. To arbitrarily make it smaller just doesn't make sense.

BTW, the PiP had a smaller tank than the regular Gen 3. Now that I think of it, both were probably weight considerations so they could maximize mpg.

 

Not that I would know for sure if or why the AWD has a smaller tank, if it does I'd think it would be cause of the extra stuff in the back for that rear wheel motor.

I can't say much about the differences in Gen 4 regular Prius trims, since I've only driven a 2020 Prius a couple of days, but if @kutztown46 was also considering a Prime as well, I'd recommend the Prime. ( sorry in advance - if that's goin to far off topic)

 

i think they threw out weight consideration out of the door for the AWDe when they decided to use the NiMh battery instead of lithium ion. The back area where the spare tire well was supposed to be was altered, meaning it's shaped differently than non AWDe due to the extra components for the AWDe. They also installed some electrical component on top, sitting where the spare tire should have been so you couldn't put a spare tire there. Only those non-awde priuses retained the spare tire well so can put a spare tire there.

 

NEVER accept trade in unless you have a choice. My 2013 Prius II was totaled in Sep 2020 and Oregon Mutual paid me $10,240.82. So my advice is waiting for your intended front wheel drive Prius to arrive.

These kits are garbage. It did not work for me when my tire was slashed on the side in North Cascade National Park. I had to drive on the rim for 15 miles before getting help. That also necessitated replacement for my undercarriage engine plastic cover. And I had to do a four-wheel alignment.

Buy the cheapest spare wheel and tire from Les Schwab. It cost me a total of $120+ or something alike.

That's not a drawback for AWD. None of 4th Gen Prius have spare tire.

 

That is not true in the US as my 2016 LE came with a spare and many of the models (not the AWDe that do not come with a spare have a place in the trunk for one.

 

And on the base level still? Which is kinda bizarre when you think about it...

 

It’s a weight game they play. Higher level vehicles have more stuff which means more weight, so the tire is sacrificed to bring down the weight. They do similar games with nimh and lithium ion batteries, all upper levels typically have lithium ion to reduce weight.

 

My Excel (uk top spec) has a spare tyre. Over here it’s availability is only to 15 inch wheel models. All 17 inch models have a tyre repair kit.
