What part is needed for “reseal timing cover”

Sorry, I forgot to update. Finished this last week. In addition to the extra fipg at the 6 locations on the cover, I also applied a bead along each of the 6 seams on the engine side.

I also replaced the thermostat.

Need help with two orings near the top of the cover. One of my old ones was flat but I guess that’s age and miles. The larger 24020 oring fits ok in the left hole but is too big for the right whole. Is that where the smaller 24015 oring goes? Seems a bit small.

 

While my thread is still awaiting moderator approval, what happens if I sealed everything except this part of the timing cover? What is this part of the cover even used for? I changed the headgasket on my prius and this is the only thing I missed when putting everything back together.

they go over how/where the sealant goes on the timing chain cover, about 2/3 through the video. They do however miss applying a bead to the engines split lines, which is most practically done on the engine, not the cover.

 

Thanks Mendel! I saw about 3 different youtube videos of changing the headgaskets and they all seemed to miss that point of sealing the inside part of the timing cover.

I know NOW that I was supposed to, but now that that boat has sailed, I want to know how critical it would be if I run it without sealing it? I mean, what fluid goes past it, and what is it sealing it from? Is it something that maintains oil pressure? Is it part of the cooling system? I have no idea what it seals, and if it REALLY is necessary to seal it. I know the repair manual mentions it, but I'm hoping that its something nonessential that just requires sealant because two metal faces are mating.

I would assume the sealant on the middle bolt hole is to keep oil from leaking out.
