agreed. i read early on that cause of death is not a standardized practice.

i do think there should be some standard for covid besides 'tested positive', but maybe it isn't possible.

Overdose deaths rose about 20,000 in 2020, about 4% of that excess. I haven't seen 2021 figures yet. Suicides actually fell, though much less dramatically.

There are other contributors to non-Covid excess, but I believe you'll be very hard pressed to find 25% of the excess being non-Covid.

Just found out my first cousin (female, late 30s) her husband, and all three of their children (3 boys aged 3-11) ALL got it. Apparently their youngest came home from some day care with a fever. They did their best to keep the other 2 kids away - but they all got it. A family of 5 in NJ. I have no idea if it's the omnicron variant or whatever. Scary stuff, hopefully they'll all be fine. My cousin is a healthy woman and so is her husband, in good shape and they eat well.

any word on how Australia is going to force every single person to accept the govt injections , now that they changed over from recommendation to edict ?

I guess swat teams tackling folks and holding them down won't look good on the news...

oh ya that's right, you don't need swat teams if you can't defend yourself...

maybe teams of ice cream vendors

    Youngsters may not remember:
We used to have sanatoriums for:
    • Leprosariums
    • Tuberculosis
    • Insane
    • Old age (still do!)

At least around here, I wish they didn't let/make the kids go back to school prior to being vaccine eligible.

It would have been great. Close the borders. Everyone isolate until it's safe, what's that 2 weeks? Then everything back to normal except the borders. (I remember back prior to vaccine during the order to stay home, our dog was dying of cancer and I had to take him to his cancer treatments, how many others I'd see out and about)....

Just listened to one of my leftist podcasts on government funded radio, and heard heard some stuff that would have gotten them de-platformed a year ago......
    https://slate.com/podcasts/political-gabfest

The audio was shocking, and if it were aired on Rogan (a podcast that I've only listened to once) then there would be a clarion call for (more) deplatforming and Allen would be looking for a new job...despite the fact that he is (real world, if not Merriam-Webster) deeply pro-vax.

They talked about some interesting ways of monitoring dampanics (waste water, incidental positive cases in hospitals, PCR v rapid antigen tests....) and RISK BASED ANALYSIS.
Soon-to-be discredited professor, Joseph G. Allen has also posted for WaPo:
    https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/02/02/lifting-covid-pandemic-restrictions-four-metrics/
Opinion | Our playbook to fight covid-19 is outdated. Here are 10 updates for 2022. - The Washington Post
    ----------
......"The two biggest determinants of risk have stayed constant over the past year — age and vaccination status. The latest CDC data show that the hospitalization rate for unvaccinated adults is 67 per 100,000. For a vaccinated adult and unvaccinated teenagers, it is approximately 5 per 100,000. The rate for a vaccinated teen is 1 per million. We have largely ignored this massive risk differential in setting policy.

......"Currently, it (CDC) pegs masking to a community's case levels and test positivity, which are two deeply flawed metrics...."

"...One-way masking is fine. Let’s dispense with the notion that masks are only protective if everyone is wearing them. Here’s a way to think about it: If everyone wears surgical masks, which have a 70 percent filtration rate, the combined protection is 91 percent because the virus must pass through masks twice. But N95 masks — now widely available — offer better protection than universal surgical mask use, which is the approach used in hospitals. For anyone who fears moving away from universal masking, the great news is that they can continue to wear an N95 mask — along with being vaccinated and boosted — and live a low-risk life regardless of what others around them are doing."

..."Masks for kids in schools should be optional in the new year. The risk of hospitalization to kids remains low, as it always has been. Plus, all school-age kids now have access to vaccines. We cannot continue to subject kids to the 2020 playbook as adults go out and do whatever they want. And, remember, parents who don’t feel comfortable can always have their children wear high-grade masks."

We were in Walmart one morning months ago. The front of the store faces east. The sun was coming up and brightly shining in the windows. The kind of light where you can see dust particles floating in the air..

An unmasked customer had both their hands full with boxes of soft drinks standing in the checkout line waiting to be checked out. They coughed as we were walking by and you could see the resulting spittle/spray spread out into the air and cover almost the entire line.

I wonder if there is a place for just plain common sense in discussing masks?

Interestingly enough, he wasn't pressed on that but he did mention that in his area of expertise that masks and their effectiveness are something of a 'thing.'
I'm sure Havad will be reconsidering their relationship with him shortly.

    I kinda liked him.
We wasn't very woke-scoldy and he's not one of those people who insist on post-nominals (like we military people with our warfare designators.... :ROFLMAO: )....but no.
He didn't do the baseball trading card thing of mentioning competing $tudies.

You mention military service and I thought of something I had all but forgotten.

In basic training we had an exercise where we had to take our full field gear and rifle; into a chamber type room where they closed the door. They then pumped the room full of mustard gas, pepper spray or some sort of noxious gas, you never saw a bunch of guys get their masks on in such a hurry. They said this was to teach us the value of our mask. They made their point. Yes, mask do work I can promise you that.

Under normal circumstances who would want a doctor to operate on them unmasked where the doctor may accidently cough sending a whole stream of droplets and particulates into your body.

An interesting discussion could be had with a painter who was spraying paint that had been atomized into an aerosol form about an intent to take away his mask
