Hey all, I'm thinking of getting a mirror Dash cam that comes with a rear camera, because the roads I drive on the people are f**cking nuts!
Has anyone fitted one and been able to utilize the existing rear camera to record?

Yup, added mine back in the summer, and it has already paid for itself! It cost me $69 from Amazon, and shortly after I installed it , well …here's the link posted here on Prius Chatte The case for having a Dash-Cam… | PriusChat

    Good luck! ;)

Did you add another rear camera or use your existing one?
If you used your existing, did you just splice into the wiring? As I want to keep my Centre console for the reversing view.

I used the one supplied with the kit (only for getting a rear-view, I think there might be a way of using it for reversing (guide-lines etc.) but I was primarily interested in the forward-view) so my rear-view camera which came with the car (displayed on the MFD) I left unaltered, in fact I think it has better resolution than the one supplied with the mirror-kit). There is a mod available in Ye Olde Prius Shoppe which allows you to switch on the rear-camera with the left/right indicators (a useful mod) but (so far) I've had zero responses to my questions to Danny (Proprietor of Ye O P S) sent 3 times to him! (…Wake Up, Danny!!!) ;)

Both my husband and I have installed independent rear cameras along with our front rear view mirror cameras in our cars with the help of our retired aerospace engineer friend,

Instead of using the suction cup. he made an aluminum angle bracket for us that wedges between the plastic trim and the rear window frame. The rear defroster traces are in the way for a successful long term suction cup mount. The aluminum bracket slides in where the suction cup mount does.

The cable is long enough to go from the driver's side top corner of the window to the rear 12 volt liquid "cigarette lighter" type power outlet.

It's been more than a few years since this post... How have your cameras held up? I'm currently researching rear view mirrors that come with recording dash cams. Which product did you buy and which product do you think would be better?

I had a white-labeled mirror cam in the Gen3 and it worked great - EXCEPT - the dfault view was always the FRONT camera. Plenty of settings to change that but you couldn't change the DEFAULT view..so that was a lifelong pain where I eventually ignored the device all together. Never a firmware update and ompany vanished from Amazon.

I am now a few weeks in on a WolfBox mirror cam (Nearly identical to the previous) and the default is BACK of teh car. Support has been fantastic.

Thanks for the update... Is the default of rear cam easy to change out of? Do you have to change it every time you turn the car on?

It really seems like WolfBox put all the other DashCam makers out of business... There use to be so many people making them and then poof.

Can you tell us more about the best features on Wolfbox? I'm fairly certain there will be one in my future and am eager to learn more so I'm more comfortable about paying. ....

Woflbox is so much better (than the white label)... same form factor .. cam that fits over your existing mirror. Yes, a bunch of settings and I have the default view of the rear view mirror as the rear of the car..no need to fuss w/it every time...set and forget.

I would imagine the design might have been leaked or hacked and it is possible the white labeled versions were Wolfbox betas...sold at steep discounts so folks purchased them and set up fly-by-night amazon stores to pawn them off. I compared the new Wolfbox to the whitelabel last week and you'd be hard pressed to find differences; even the rubber strap was identical.

    Best features:
    • No extra 'black box thing' sticking on your window. Once it is installed, it blends in like OEM.
    • Price point.
    • Quality so far pretty good, including video. Haven't 'tested' night time footage yet and day has been more than needed.
    • Lot of settings to customize to your preference.
    • Personally I have found their customer support over the top positive, very responsive and good customer service.

If you can hold off, gab during Amazon Prime. I do recommend.

    Wishlist:
    • My model is lower end w/SD card that loops - would like to stream footage to phone in the future.
    • Install kit to include: Fuse puller, longer wire and plugs to transformer box.
    • Wifi to stream footage.
    • Increase 3 minute loops to 5 minute loops.
