If you watch the infection rates for your county ie: wunderground.com is what I watch for my county and anywhere I plan to travel, you'll notice omicron has very hight rates of infection currently in many locations, but the number of deaths has been mostly static as well.

I think vacs and testing have played a big part in the severity of the severity of the disease as it manifests and the symptoms experienced after contacting. Just one perspective from a self isolating partner who's other half works at a fairly large local senior facility.

I'm keeping my fingers and my nostrils crossed, even though I already felt things being reported as possible symptoms, ie: temporary sore throat.

When I was in the Marines, the more recent Omicron reports would be filed under "S*cks less."

If 'good news' leads to abandoning masks, social distancing, and other COVID avoidance technologies, it increases the final tally.

It is also good to track your local medical services like this January 11 data from Madison County where I live:

The "Health System" includes hospitals across North Alabama.

this chart only shows the number of people on vents that have a positive test ... it does not define if the blessed virus PUT THEM ON THE VENT... so it's very easy to skew the numbers.

if you talk to some folks that deal with this every day, you'll find that the movers are constantly being fudged higher, never lower

I do 'Facebook' with my brothers, George an ER nurse and Will an X-ray technician. I also talk with my brother Dave who is an actuary for Blue Cross and married to an ER physician. Mom is a retired RN and I spoke with her. In contrast, "some folks" seems a little wishful.

Perhaps you might visit your local hospital morgue to understand how COVID deaths are documented (or ask Mr. Google.)

Please explain: what can't be right about it?

As I read it, (omicron death rate) = (1 - 0.91) * (delta death rate). I.e. if the delta death rate was 2%, then the omicron rate is 0.18%.

Similarly, the omicron ICU rate is (1 - 0.74) * (delta ICU rate), or 0.26*(delta ICU rate).

    Nothing mathematically impossible here.

They picked their own governmental system and tax structure and overall social policies. We picked our own. Just because they made different choices, doesn't necessarily mean that they are oppressed.

George and I chatted about it. The 3x premium paid to ‘temp’ nurses triggers resentment by the staff nurses. But the well paid, temp nurses have no home-base for housing or other loan based financial services.

Video report from our area on how unvaccinated individuals are destroying the Health Care system for others, the situation has actually gotten worse since the video was made

I didn't notice the date on that video (September 10th, so generally delta-flavored) until the reporter mentioned how the hospital system expected their caseloads to remain elevated through September and October and I did a bit of a double-take.

I mentioned it has gotten worse since the video, the cases did rise and now are complemented by the Omicron variant. I think the key element is 95% of the beds are inhabitant by unvaccinated Covid patients who now are forcing surgeries, to be rescheduled and critical care is very much compromised due to a lack of available facilities and personnel to accommodate people.

The other half of the beds are unvaccinated, ~25% of the population. Worse, the unvaccinated are more likely to take an ICU bed and worse outcomes. But I live in Huntsville Alabama and it does not look good here.

agreed. considering that, and the fact that everything has reopened, i think we're in pretty good shape, except for the hospitals, which are suffering the double whammy of staff shortages and covid surge.

it would help if intelligent people tried a little harder to protect themselves and others, but from my observations, most have given up. it's been a long two years, even the best of us are worn out.

i hope their resentment is focused ont the right group of people (administration/govt) and not their co workers...

you know, put the blame for the circumstances where it should be, instead of on the people that are skirting the bs rules and making more money by doing so ...
