My goal isn't to reset the light, but I want to know if the light is still accurately keeping track of when my next oil change is due, after I've had to disconnect the battery for other reasons.

Dont know but I'd think so unless you got a memory minder installed in cig lighter or such . Mines been on for years I never touch it . Change oil n leave it on . Too lazy to hold buttons . My oil changes used to come in a few weeks literally.. I cannot remember what happened last time I changed 12 volt like 9 weeks ago to the oil reminder that is

No. That would be pretty bad if you had to replace a dead battery just before an oil change was due. That data is kept in non-volatile memory. (Much like the odometer numbers.)

If I ever have the car apart again I will just undo that maintenance reminder lamp so it will never light up again I would do the same with the traction control the ABS and all that too just so I don't have to see it text stream can tell me it's not functioning properly I seem to live with that plugged up once a month once a week just because so the lights would be good to just have out so when I'm driving it night I'm not blinded by five amber light sitting there for the hell of it basically telling me that I have low pressure in one wheel but I'm stopping fine what do I care I don't care if my brakes lock up they did for the first 40 years of my life

For those who care, 2006 Gen2 Prius MAINT light reset (in my words):

    a. With car running/ready mode do the following:

    i. select odometer setting rather than trip odometer; and
ii. turn OFF the power for the car.

    b. With Gen2 powered off do the following:

    i. press and HOLD odometer function selection button; and

ii. press the power button TWICE (do NOT step on brake).

Note: ,you should then see six flashing dashes as the reset process begins. The number of dashes will decrease until there are no dashes left. At that point, odometer will reappear.
Once odometer reappears then reset is complete.

It's far from intuitive, but it is easy. They finally got it right in Gen 4; they made it a menu item on the MID.
