i'm hearing of a lot more cases in family, extended family and friends.

my bil's family in nashville has it, 8 persons. his wife got the worst, describing it as 2x any flu she ever had. fortunately, no hospitalizations. yet.
the 'funny' thing is, they can't imagine where they got it, even though both work and 4 kids go to school

I thought measles set the baseline for "really really contagious". The original covid-19 was far short of that.

My wife's daughter in the Nashville area came down with it but she is in healthcare training. Happily she is vaccinated.

Daughter in Nashville got it during the past couple weeks. Had mediocre symptoms for a few days, & with 4 kids at home, none of them got it after multiple tests. Oldest is 11.
Youngest of her 4 is 3. She had symptoms, tested negative. Hubby away at work 16 hours a day of avoided the whole thing.

Yup, but we were talking about the blessed Ronda thing, so I figured the first scary Ronda was the baseline.

Now they're saying it's really really easy to get, but it's really mild

    Unless

    Here's the funny part

Unless you get the FLUrona... so we're finally come full circle and calling it flu after two years of swearing it's not the flu.

    Cool

    Taxology can be so hard:
    • Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome COronaVirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)
    • Delta - first variant
    • Omicron - second variant
Other variants are possible as RNA transcription is 'noisy'. This leads to frequent changes called variants. Regardless of the name, the virus and variants remain a public health risk.

A really stupid guy called it "China virus": Yes, of course Donald Trump is calling coronavirus the 'China virus' for political reasons - CNNPolitics

    upload_2022-1-7_6-21-50.png

Trump has, quite clearly, crossed out "corona" before "virus" and replaced it with the word "Chinese." That edit is part of a concerted effort by the President and some in his administration to change the public understanding of this as a global pandemic that's every nation's responsibility to: China did this.

That attempted narrative shift is beyond question. What appears to be up for some debate is whether or not Trump's rhetorical change reflects him simply using proper geographic labeling -- the coronavirus did emerge from the Wuhan province -- or whether it is part of a broader attempt to drive xenophobic sentiment toward China and, by so doing, avoid taking the blame for his own administration's struggles to deal with the virus.

The reason for being accurate is to avoid being seen as not being very bright. Worse, getting a treatment that is ineffective like: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_unproven_methods_against_COVID-19

One really needs the right treatment for the malady and flu is different from COVID-19: Weekly U.S. Influenza Surveillance Report | CDC

I remember differently, as in the original 'rona being called out as only moderately contagious, you had to work harder to get it than numerous other diseases. E.g. 15+ minutes in close aerosol-sharing contact. But when combined with its higher deadliness, we had a bigger problem.
Omicron is a quite different "it" than the original version. We are still trying to figure out what this new "it" really is. This new "it" is almost like a new disease of still-to-be-determined seriousness.
You are confusing "its" again. Flurona is two quite different "Its" ganging up together. There has been no circling back, the flu took a sabbatical for almost two years, but is now coming back to work and double-teaming with the 'rona.

Flurona is simultaneously hosting influenza and Coronavirus infections in same body. Whether they can genetically mingle in such a setting is unknown to me. But this is an important part of what makes virus/host interactions kinda scary. Each kind may have its own 'intellectual property' with few barriers on sharing.

Influenza is really good at varying its surface 'look' and so is difficult to vaccinate against through time. Other viruses are good at other aspects related to getting a good infection going. You do not want them talking to each other.

I didn't mean to suggest that the two disease in 'flurona' were talking to each other, only that they were striking at the same time. But it would be scary if they are talking.

In the early omicron days, I did hear some suggestion that it might be the result of a covid-19 variant and one of the four common cold coronaviruses talking to each other, but have heard no followup since. It seems that if that idea had substance, genetic sequencing evidence would have been out by now.

Bats (Chiroptera, not hitting sticks) are problematical because they host many viral infections without dying*. 'Good' Petri dishes. Also because they are not much deterred from inhabiting the human/wild interface. And, when not DDT-deterred, they persist.

As much as humans might (wish to) avoid being virus-mixers, we shall still be hit by these metaphorical sticks. It's complicated, all the way down.

*without dying - bats exhibit (I think) the widest body temperature ranges of any mammal. Such a planet. Such stuff.

Perhaps the comments of this report may provide insights:

Regardless, we've got a ways to go with COVID-19 and its variants. Still if this report helps drive our skeptical brethren to finally follow CDC guidance, good.

I think the post above refers to variant ...1604... or whatever it is (don't make me look that up) which was also named IHU because French hospital where it was first detected was IHU. I thought we were done naming viruses//variants after places but ... shrug...

If this shall be a squirrel for any to chase, go run. Run. Others have much else to consider.

Not sure what else one might consider, unless there is Pi. If one needs to get up to speed before that tiktok performance, this may help :
