lots 'O' pretty pictures & video ads. Got in the pre-order line . . . but THIS is causing a double take.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 Recall On The Horizon Due To Coolant Leaks?

Hyundai acknowledges coolant leak in Ioniq 5 - UPI.com

Their Kona EV suffered a batch of issues that iirc eventually got ironed out.
Hyundai Announces Massive Battery Recall For Roughly 82,000 BEVs

maybe the quality scare will stop the stealerships from trying to gouge buyers to the tune of $5K-$10K like what's happening to the rav4-prime

Recalls - even before hitting the streets. not too encouraging. . Wish they'd have put as much into their quality department as they do their ads. Faulty cooling won't necessarily kill the baby in the crib ... but it does raise an eye brow.

off topic . . . . but there seems to be quality issues of the single motor id4's as well. primarily software.
    growing pains.

The ID.3 had issues with software in the beginning. Seems making a mass market EV isn't that easy.

In all the reviews, they say that the car is bigger than it looks on screen. But then the reviewers would tell us how tall they were, and I thought that would give me a reasonable idea of how big the car is. I was wrong.

I saw my first Ioniq 5 yesterday. Someone who lives near my daughter's school - someone who's actually a colleague of my wife - has got one of the first 500 to be sold in Australia, and it was parked on the street so I got a good look when I went to do school pick up.

    IT IS HUGE.

It looks, as many have said, like a Mk I Golf, or like a Lancia Delta (but a bit different - a "Delta variant", if you will). And no matter how much you weigh it against a TV presenter, it seems that it should be bigger than those, but not massively so, maybe like a bit bigger than a Mk VIII Golf. But that is not the case.

It is a lot bigger than my X3. The wheelbase is longer than the X5 that was parked nearby, but the overhangs are shorter. And it's taller than an X1. Looking at it from the outside, it felt as big as the X5.

And, in the flesh, it really is quite striking. It looked like nothing else on the road. Even though it was white (my least favourite colour for most cars, but apparently all my wife's colleague could get because he ordered it a couple of hours after orders opened up and it was all that was left), it still looked really very impressive.

So - even Australia is more towards the front of the line then USA. Nice. Just lovely. Only news we are getting about the car is that the delivery dates will keep getting pushed back to who knows when..

I've been told by a Hyundai rep that they are going to announce pricing and delivery info in the US in a couple of weeks.

    Huge compared to what?

It's the same length as a Prius Prime, 5 inches wider and 5 inches taller. It's basically Rav4 sized. I wouldn't call that "huge". I'd call an Excursion or Suburban "huge" (a Suburban is 44 inches longer, 7 inches wider and 13 inches taller than an Ioniq5) but I have two family members who have sprinter vans that are way bigger than either of those. One uses it for camping (it has a queen-sized bed, a kitchen, a bathroom and enough solar to run everything) and one for business.

It’s even at the ports in B.C. so it should arrive in Canadian dealerships some time early Dec.

Literally the first line - bigger than it looks on the screen.

It is like an optical illusion--it is huge compared to what it looks like. Because there's no engine, they can move the wheels farther apart, which somehow makes it look much smaller, more like a hatchback than an SUV, until you walk up to it (or so I've been told). In Byorn Nyland's banana box test, it scored higher in the number of banana boxes it holds with the seats up (11) than almost any other car he has tested, including the Model X. Even with seats folded down it matched the most of the EV SUVs he's tested.

An Excursion is more of diesel truck than a car, in my opinion. It is built on an F250 chassis.

Much of their transportation is smaller than what the USA is lumbering around in ..... especially in our mountains & rural communities .... mostly land barges.

Tempting as it is, I'm not going to say it.

So I'll say huge compared to a Mk I Golf or Lancia Delta, but - I will concede this - small compared to a Sprinter van or a Suburban or a Saturn V or the Empire State Building or Alaska or Jupiter.

    Yes, precisely.

Yes. It really messes with your eyes.

I saw a second one today, in metallic grey, and it's even more confusing than the white one. Really nice, though.

Yes. People do have bigger cars here than they do in Britain, where I grew up, but they're still small compared to America. Our biggest utes (pick-up trucks), for example, are Ford Rangers, Toyota Hiluxes and VW Amaroks. Some people have grey-import American ones like Ford F-150s and Dodge Rams, and they just look ridiculous in our traffic.

Yes, but we don't have the Mach-E, or the ID.4 (or ID.3) or Q4 E-tron or Enyaq, and we're very unlikely to get them in the next 18 months. It's part of why that first allocation of Ioniq 5s was snapped up so quickly.

I've been lumbering around on my ebike lately. 64 pounds and 55 miles/kWh (give or take how hard I pedal).

Yeah. It's 10" shorter than a Highlander but with a wheelbase 6" longer than the Highlander.

Or it's 1.6" longer than a RAV4 but with a wheelbase more than a foot longer.
