It would be hard to duplicate their time again, since the darn car is not even available in the USA.

 

Competition is good.
It won't be released until next year until then we don't have full specs. Still we have some details

300 mile epa range estimate on larger 77.4 kwh battery pack
400V and 800V charging with 18 minutes to charge 210 miles on the larger pack if pack is very low and 800V charger.

With model Y taking until October for new order delivery, I'm sure if this lives up to the hype dealers will be charging a premium for it.

I would assume it will take until 2024 for high volume deliveries in the US of this or bz4x.

 

Competition of products in customer hands is good. Competition of press releases seldom ends well.

Let me know when it is available to me with experienced service available within 50 miles and a charging network similar to the current Tesla chargers in numbers.. Until then ... we used to call it vaporware.

 

Those are some pretty specific requirements you've posted. It's well known that there are many states where tesla does not have "experienced service available within 50 miles" of all areas. Add to that the Tesla promises to open their charging network to other cars (and we know we can trust Elon to make good on that promise) and the EV6 looks like it could be a competitor.

 

Full disclosure, I have a Model 3 and no desire for a Model Y or other EV. Regardless, I suppose we should see a Kia YouTube:

The poster is generally pessimistic on BEVs, as I recall. Open Superchargers will be great for Europe. Perhaps even China, as I am positive Tesla's for there use the local charging standard plug. For North America, people will need to get an adapter,. The cost of which will likely only have a minority making use of Superchargers.

 

Those “50 kW” EVSE should be distribution, L2, with Tesla plugs. In Nashville TN, they aren’t even metered or charged.

My guess would be smallest investment for access to subsidies.

 

I believe tesla uses 72 KW superchargers with L2 in some urban areas. This is cheaper for them to install and the grid may be expensive to have faster chargers without big batteries buffering it. These are typically in urban areas near restaurants and/or shopping. In canada maybe they are doing 50 kw instead, but I don't understand why they would be next to other superchargers.

 

I've heard from Ioniq forums that the Ioniq 5 may not arrive in the US until spring of next year and then only in small numbers. Hyundai and Kia electric cars have always been vaporware in the US--only available in a few states in small numbers. Their cars look great, but until they are selling 100s of thousands of EVs in the US, it is hard to take them seriously.

 

I now remember hearing about Tesla installing slower DC chargers. They intended for local use; an option to AC Level 2 charging.

The US is not the number market for plug ins. That is China, followed by Europe. Most EV manufacturers are going to prioritize those markets over the US. If Tesla hadn't been a domestic brand, we'd be totally SOL.

 

Hyundai sold 10,000 EVs total in the last year--that includes Europe and China. Tesla sold about 700,000. One of those companies is selling compliance cars.

 

One of those companies ensured a solid supply of batteries.
Another had a serious issue with the batteries they had last year. It was bad enough that the company deemed canceling the BEV model was best.

 

That's an interesting viewpoint T_Newt. Tesla sold 700,00 cars, but by comparison, Hyundai sales were down by that same number in 2020. I'd say that Hyundai has the resources to make life hard for Tesla when they want to.
