Which many home garages are.

 

If you have a garage for your car, I say it probably is a plug-in.

 

Many apartments also have basement level garages with limited ventilation.

 

I've had a garage ever since my first shared apartment out of college.
None, before 2010, were plug-ins.

 

Home garages are common in the US, and were long before plug ins came along. Considering the cost of hydrogen car, a potential buyer very likely has a garage.

 

You left out the fact that the fire had nothing with the hydrogen drivetrain or the tanks. It was a bus that caught fire.

 

Nothing left out. Metal neither burns nor explodes. Please enlighten us.

-question for you is what ignited the fire, and what sustained (fueled) it to such a high degree to allow such destruction
-I see no further reporting of cause from fire investigation
-but point remains - this is a very serious thing, hydrogen and fire in an enclosed space...

 

Only thing I saw at the link (once translated) was that the hydrogen tanks had not exploded.
No cause was yet known.

One hydrogen tank, when there are multiple tanks, does not necessarily mean all tanks will explode.




Then there's the separate issue of an explosion caused by a combustible fuel? Or over pressurization, or tank failure, whether due to impact, or defect.

It may need a little bondo too. Does bondo work on hydrogen tanks?

On the hydrogen bus explosion in the Holland, a post a week ago says cause is still under investigation. It was a new bus and in a maintenance building so that technicians could examine it. It is likely that hydrogen detectors need to be in all garages and maintenance buildings in case of a leak. All busses can explode. Different safety precautions are needed for hydrogen versus natural gas as hydrogen does not give off an odor. Added costs make hydrogen vehicles unlikely to ever be viable as light transportation, but I would not count them out for buses in some regions of the world. Fueling and maintenance costs are much higher today than for electric and natural gas busses. TCO is much lower for these and diesel busses. My city had a successful trial of phev hydrogen busses, but this was done with lots of government money to study them. Austin now has given the biggest order for an american city for BEV busses as pilot studies have shown in the cities routes this is the best way to remove diesel busses. It is only a partial replacement.

The hydrogen station that was given to UT as part of the phev hydrogen bus study, now has a DOE grant to be used as part of a green hydrogen study of which toyota is involved and will provide mirai's as the vehicles. Electricity from some of the green hydrogen will power A super computing building.
