Featured low hybrid price on little pick up

    2022 Ford Maverick Hybrid First Test Review: Big MPG, Big Fun

    Pretty cool, the small pick up is coming back and the base model ford maverick is an affordable hybrid getting 37 mpg epa combined and 33 highway. Many people that I know that own pick ups would be happy with a small one but get to the dealer and get upsold to f150s and tundras. I think this hybrid and the upcoming plug-in pick ups may start cutting into the thirsty pick up segment.

    The upcoming hybrid tundra is a step in the right direction but it is still likely to still consume a lot of gas with its 6 cylinder engine. This maverick would be better with the rav4 hybrid set up. I hope Toyota puts something like that in a pick up soon.

    Some discussion on this in the Ford/Lincoln area.

    The hybrid Maverick is FWD only. No rumor on it even getting the Escape hybrid's mechanical AWD. A shame because it would otherwise be perfect for my eventual second car.

    I don't expect the Tundra hybrid to do any better than the F150 one in fuel economy. With the Ford and Hyundai bring back the small pick-up, maybe Toyota will get in on it too. A new Tacoma will come out first.

    I really like the electric awd concept better in the rav4 hybrid. Motortrend mentioned that it is a different mg2 motor in the maverick, a switched reluctance like the tesla's rear motor, which is more efficient, more powerful, and lighter than the one in the escape. Word is the hybrid will have a wait list and dealers will try to get people to buy the more expensive turbo model. My guess is when that ends they will offer awd in a hybrid, but I would be it would be improved upon from the escape hybrid.

    The current v8 being discontinued is thirsty. Getting similar to the f150 hybrid would save gas or dollars, epa estimates that you would spend $6500 less on fuel in the hybrid versus the v8 truck over 10 years. The hybrid is more powerful too.

    i don't use my pick up much anymore, but if i did, i would definitely consider this.
    i wish they hadn't called it a maverick though, too much experience with those in the 70's

    I'd like to see the Maverick hybrid get AWD, but Ford has a habit of not offering it with the base power train of a model.

    Yeah...I'm not excited at all about the hybrid Tundra.

    I think Toyota really missed the boat on not offering a hybrid Tacoma...which would be their best bet at trying to compete with the Maverick. However, I'm not even sure a hybrid Tacoma would compete...since it isn't a unibody.

    Toyota doesn't seem to have *any* plan for a small unibody truck at this point. Seems like really, really poor planning on Toyota's part.

    Sounds like a Tacoma redesign comes out after the new Tundra release; maybe a 2023MY. If a hybrid happens, I'd expect a parallel system like the Tundra is getting. It is more a Ranger competitor though.

    It shouldn't take Toyota long to do a Rav4 based pick-up, once they decide to do it.
