I'm sure this has been covered but I wanted to share my experience with this. I went from a Lexus LS sedan to my Prius and one of the first things I noticed when driving was the amount of road noise and the perceived lack of solidness. I know this is typical of most (all?) compact cars these days but it was really noticeable to me. I bought some Frost King adhesive insulation at Home Depot for $26 (12" x 15') and applied it to the four doors and rear hatch. Huge difference in the sound and feel. Even when you close the doors they seem more solid and close with a thunk. I'd highly recommend this if anyone has been considering it. Cheap and easy and provides a big improvement.
There was a thread a few months ago about this issue but my recollection was the material used was a rubberized product from Amazon that is thinner and more expensive. This sounds like an interesting thing to try. Did you take any photos or have any problems with removing or replacing panels?
Sorry, no pics but the panels were super easy to remove/install. Two screws and some clips. I watched a bunch of videos and researched Dynamat installation. One of the posts I found was from an acoustic engineer who said you only need 30% coverage to get sufficient dampening. Based on the construction of the Prius doors, I ended putting large panels of insulation inside the holes and on the outside door walls. For the inner sections, I put small pieces wherever there was space (especially around the speakers). $26 and about two hours was well worth it.
From a Lexus to a G2 oh the humanity . The front doors respond greatly to any insulation. I had a new stereo and front speakers installed at Best Buy and they left the clear plastic cover off the inside of the door. It just seals all the door mechanicals and now the door makes a loud hollow metal boink noise when you shut. Just that little cellophane missing off the inside of the door caused a lot of noise. I put a lot of eBay peel and stick in the hatch floor and spare tire tub that really helped.

What exactly did you use on the hatch floor and tire tub? That seems a simple solution to try. Would like to match what you suggested not try to reinvent it.

I installed 2 complete boxes of Kilmat that I ordered off of Amazon. $120 total. I did the entire roof, doors, interior floor and trunk in my wifes car. It took about 8 hours to do it over a couple of weekends. It was a lot of work but well worth it. My prius is loud in comparison to hers. it was the .80 thickness FYI. But I LOVE the simplicity and low cost version that you did. I might start with that with mine.
